How can he run so nonchalantly with a child perched on his shoulder? Demons are incredible! Is this a difference in physical ability compared to humans? Or is this particular demon exceptional? In any case, the demon was running incredibly fast with a perfectly calm expression. I, on the other hand, was utterly exhausted. My stamina is practically non-existent.
Fortunately, Nonnalie and Zen weren't waiting too far away, so I managed to reach them before my stamina completely ran out.

The two of them clearly showed expressions of relief when they saw my face. Zen, sheltered behind Nonnalie’s back, had teary eyes. Thank goodness, they seemed unharmed. No visible injuries.

「That’s... not a lizard, is it?」
As far as I know, most lizards are about the size that can fit in the palm of your hand. Rarely, there are larger ones, but they're typically only about the size of an arm.
Lizards the size of a cow or a horse simply shouldn't exist. At least, not among the beasts of the human world.
「It's a monster.」
「I figured.」
The demon man stated calmly. Yes, I thought so too.
There were three large lizard monsters. I glanced to the side and saw two lying dead. Nonnalie must have taken them down—impressive.
However, taking down two seemed to be her limit... the durability of the weapon in her hand had met its end there. The sword Nonnalie was gripping was snapped clean in the middle. Dealing with the remaining three would be impossible with that.
Could I defeat them with my Light Magic? I didn't know; I had never used it on a monster before. Besides, what was it? How do I put it... something about these monsters... something's strange?
「That's odd.」
The demon man muttered, as if confirming my thoughts. He lowered his child from his shoulder and rested a hand on his chin.
「Odd? What's odd about it?」
「While they are indeed carnivorous and eat beasts, they do not hunt with this level of ferocity and exposed murderous intent. Furthermore, they are rather cowardly, and they would not attack troublesome humans.」
「But they are attacking, aren't they?」
「That is why I said it is odd. Also, the air surrounding them is strange. What is that murky, dark presence?」
I was startled.
I focused my gaze, and sure enough. I felt the same defilement that I had sensed in the meat I had seen for cooking.
This made it clear. The defilement was originating within this forest. And it wasn't a result of suffering inflicted when humans hunted them. Something was happening to them while they were alive to cause this defilement.
「That's defilement. If I can eliminate it... will they return to normal?」
「Most likely.」
「Then that's simple.」
While defeating them might be difficult, purification shouldn't be too hard. At the very least, I was able to purify that meat.
I concentrated my mind and thrust both hands forward.
「What are you...?」
「Be quiet for a moment.」
I shot a glare at the demon man, who looked puzzled by my actions. Then I turned back to face the three giant lizards and closed my eyes.
Even with my eyes closed, I could tell. A dark... an intensely dark defilement was enveloping them. It was as clear as if I could see it.
To purify them, I unleashed my Light Magic. I felt a slight gasp beside me.
