「I'm Having a Baby」So My Husband Told Me
Bedtime Story 3 ~ Who Is the Excuse "I Am Not a God" For?

「Hey, did you hear about the student in the next class?」
It was lunchtime on yet another day. I was still complaining, 「I'm bored!」 while stuffing my face with an egg sandwich when Mintia brought up a topic. And why is she even here? Since that day I decided I wouldn't forgive her if I saw her again, we've been spending lunch together for days in a row.
「Did you finally make a friend in the next class?」
「I wish I did, but no!」
You don't have to deny it so vehemently while shedding tears.
「So? What about the student in the next class?」
Linda, who is accustomed to the normal routine between Mintia and me, returned to the topic after chewing and swallowing. She knows that our tangents can be lengthy.
「Well, I heard they were hit by a carriage in town and are seriously injured.」
「Oh, that's terrible. It's good that they survived.」
「Apparently, they tried to avoid it in a hurry, but the carriage was going too fast to get out of the way completely.」
「I see. How dangerous.」
I nodded in agreement, then finished eating and put my things away, saying, 「Thanks for the meal.」 When Mintia asked, 「No extra today?」 I replied, 「The family is struggling before payday today.」 Could you please refrain from calling me 「pitiful」?
「And so, you see,」
Mintia, who finished eating her lunch, which was quite lavish with side dishes, wiped her mouth and continued.
「Their parents are looking for a Light Magic user.」
At those words, the air changed between Linda and me. Mintia, who knew nothing, continued to speak.
「Light Magic is just a fantasy, isn't it? Being able to heal any injury—that's the realm of the gods. A tale that could only be true for non-human beings.」
「Oh, why is that?」
Linda asked, sounding unconvinced.
Mintia shrugged.
「I've never heard of a Light Magic user existing today.」
「But they certainly existed in the past, didn't they?」
「That's a fairy tale.」
「They say magic is two sides of the same coin. Since Dark Magic users definitely exist, Light Magic users must too.」
「If they existed, injured people would be swarming them.」
「Maybe they're staying silent because they hate that sort of thing.」
「...Well, I guess I don't know if you put it that way.」
Mintia cut her words off there and looked at Linda with a suspicious expression.
「What's wrong, Linda? You're unusually challenging.」
「It's not that... I just think concluding that they don't exist is a bit...」
「Even if they did exist, they wouldn't show themselves. If they did, I'll say it again, injured people would swarm them.」
「You're right.」
When Linda nodded, the conversation lapsed. I interjected into the silence.
「Is the student conscious?」
「I heard they're unconscious. The bleeding was severe... But maybe it's better if they don't wake up.」
「Why?」
Mintia shrugged at my question, too.
「Apparently, both their legs... the consensus is that they might have to be amputated. That's why their parents are...」
At that moment, a heavy, oppressive atmosphere dominated the scene.
At the same time, the warning bell rang, and Mintia retreated to her own classroom. Even she didn't seem to feel like joking around.
I watched her leave and returned to my seat. Linda looked at me with a worried expression.
Her eyes asked, (What are you going to do?)
I don't know. I just don't know.
I unconsciously looked at my hands and agonized over it.
Why was I blessed with this power?
Why did God give someone like me such amazing power?
My Light Magic can heal any injury.
The first time I activated it was when my older younger brother, Dalsh, who is now seven, was two years old. When I was nine, he was seriously injured in an attack by a wild animal.
We were taking a walk outside with Mother when we were suddenly attacked. I was next to Mother, but Dalsh was a little distance away. I could see him, but I couldn't reach him.
It happened too fast.
I still can't forget the color of the blood flowing after my brother's scream and my mother's scream.
Father noticed and quickly defeated the beast with his sword, but Dalsh was barely alive.
Mother was wailing and panicking, and Father was crying with a face of despair.
My brother was about to pass away.
The moment I saw that, something snapped inside me. No, perhaps the expression exploded is more accurate.
I didn't think about what I should do. I just knew that that's what I needed to do.
I gently touched my brother's hand and activated the power... the magic. The dazzling Light Magic.
A few minutes later, my uninjured brother was smiling in front of our astonished parents.
Seeing that, my parents broke down in tears of relief and joy and hugged my brother. Immediately after, I collapsed.
The first activation of Light Magic was unexpectedly draining, and I had to lie in bed with a high fever for three days.
(I'm not trying to hide it, but I somehow feel it's better not to tell anyone.)
That was the conclusion I reached. My parents agreed with it.
It's been a hundred years since the line of Light Magic users disappeared from this world, I hear. They are universally desired, and because they never appear, they have somehow been deified.
If it were known that I am a Light Magic user... first, the Temple would move. Then the Royal Family would move.
If that happened, I wouldn't be able to stay with my family anymore. I would have to live a life without freedom.
I have no intention of hiding it—that's not a lie.
But I also won't speak of it more than necessary.
Linda once learned my secret when I healed a serious injury of hers. She knows the importance of the power and keeps silent. I never asked her to keep quiet, but that is the proof of her friendship and the depth of her feelings for me.
(What should I do? It's like... the conclusion has already been reached, hasn't it?)
I don't believe I can heal every injured person in this world. That's absolutely impossible.
If I belonged to the Temple, I might be able to heal many injuries, if not all.
But... I am not a god.
My magical power has limits.
But human desire has none.
If I were to declare myself a Light Magic user, injured people would inevitably swarm me every day. And after that, I would become someone not allowed to rest.
If that happens... that would surely be the start of a life heavier and more painful than death.
That's why, today too, I will secretly sneak into the hospital and heal. But only that one person. The only one whose 'injury' I heard about.
I won't look at the other hospital rooms.
(Because I am not a god...)
That statement is the last defense for me, a human with limits, to protect myself.
It is the fortress of foolish me, who will never apologize to the people I cannot heal.
*****
Note: I'd probably just use it to heal back pain and sore muscle.
