Enchantment Skill 2
Translated by: ME
*****
I was practically bursting with excitement now that Leon was going to teach me how to perform Enchantment.
By acquiring a skill different from Compounding or Formation, a whole new world of alchemy was about to open up to me!
「Before we begin, I just want to confirm—you've never used Enchantment before, right, Mia-sama?」
「No, I’m still very much an apprentice. I only started practicing Compounding after I began working under Master Clein.」
「You really have just started, then. And yet you've already been recognized by Obaba-sama and achieved such great things... You’re amazing, Mia-san!」
(R-really?) Leon was certainly good at handing out compliments. Not that he stood to gain anything by flattering a mere Viscounts's daughter.
While I was basking in the praise, Master Clein stood beside me with a look of profound skepticism.
「Leon. Don't believe a word she says. I certainly don't treat her like an apprentice.」
「Oh, stop raising the bar like that! ...Wait, no, please *do* treat me like an apprentice.」
「Talk to me after you start acting a bit more like one. You mastered Compounding and Formation in a mere month, and now you're trying to learn Enchantment. There isn't another 'apprentice' like that in existence besides you, Mia.」
When Master Clein shut me down that bluntly, I truly couldn't find a comeback.
「That's one thing, this is another. Events just happened to overlap by chance.」
I tried to brush it off with a vague excuse. Master Clein shot me a chilling look, so I gathered I hadn't quite fooled him.
The sight must have been amusing, as Leon let out a little giggle.
「You two are very close. It feels like it’s been a long time since I’ve seen Master Clein act so familiar with a woman.」
Hearing Leon's words, I searched my memories, and it was true that Master Clein showed no interest in romance. He’d even mentioned he wasn't thinking about marriage; perhaps he was simply bad at dealing with noblewomen.
In other words, even back when I was working the reception desk at the Adventurers Guild, he hadn't treated me as a noble lady, but rather as a fellow alchemy enthusiast.
Alice had once said with a sharp, knowing look, *'I'd say there's a spark on both sides,'* but in reality, that was impossible.
We were simply two people captivated by alchemy, a bond strong enough to break down the walls between genders.
「I’m simply fed up with the tiresome socializing required of nobles. If I pointlessly expand my social circle, it just robs me of time for alchemy.」
(I knew it!) Here was the reason why the atmosphere in the workshop never turned strange despite a man and woman being alone together!
It was because this workshop was occupied by two absolute alchemy geeks!
「Master Clein and I have known each other a long time, and now we have a master-disciple relationship. We maintain a very comfortable distance.」
I felt Master Clein’s cold gaze again, as if he wanted to say, *'We’ve had a "master-disciple atmosphere" exactly zero times...'*
In response, I narrowed my eyes at him, my expression practically screaming: *Then please teach me even more.*
It was the perfect eye contact for a pair of alchemy geeks.
While we were doing that, Leon, our Enchantment instructor, picked up a Sacred Mana Stone.
「Anyway, shall I show you a demonstration first? We don't have much time.」
At the prospect of finally being taught the Enchantment skill, my eyes began to gleam with predatory intensity.
Today, I would accept Leon as my master and properly learn the art of Enchantment.
「To make Holy Water, you need to transfer the power of the Sacred Mana Stone into magic-infused water. The skill used to transfer magical properties from such materials is called Enchantment.」
Leon submerged the Sacred Mana Stone into the magic-infused water and held his hand over it, deploying an Enchantment Field. Before my very eyes, only the mana from the stone dissolved into the liquid, producing "Holy Water"—magic water so clear it shimmered with reflected light.
「Woooooah! So *that's* Enchantment...!」
「Y-yes. I'm honored you're so surprised, but you're making me blush.」
(Ah, sorry.) My "noble lady" persona had drifted even further away, hadn't it? I'd slipped up.
I figured this was exactly why I felt so much like a commoner, yet my mind was already racing with alchemical thoughts.
Watching the deployment of the Enchantment Field firsthand had raised a specific question.
「Didn't that look somewhat similar to the deployment of a Compounding Field?」
「I don't know the specifics myself, but apparently, all Field Deployments are fundamentally the same. It seems they change based on the flow and wavelength of mana, as well as the intent the caster pours into it.」
「I see. I didn't notice that at all when I learned Formation.」
「Perhaps it's something you only notice once the number of things you can do increases? If you don't have something to compare it to, there are things you simply won't see.」
I see. So that was why Master Clein told me I should increase my proficiency in Formation. If my senses got muddled, I could end up losing the skills I’d worked so hard to acquire.
(He really is like a master in those moments...) I thought, re-recognizing Master Clein as my true teacher.
