Enchantment Skill 1

Forming a temporary partnership with Leon to handle the King's request, we split up to begin preparations for crafting the purification potions.

The recent monster outbreak, which remained a mystery even after the Knights' investigation, was an unprecedented situation that clearly had the King worried. I could practically smell the danger wafting off this assignment.

As someone who only recently became a Court Alchemist's assistant, I felt like this might be a bit over my head... and yet, my heart was racing at the prospect of compounding a new potion for the first time in a while.

Most importantly, I might finally get to learn the Enchantment skill I'd been looking forward to.

To call this a "two birds with one stone" request would be an understatement.

Driven by an unusual amount of enthusiasm, I quickly finished setting up the equipment and readied everything for the purification potion process.

Since Leon hadn't returned from his shopping trip yet, I approached Master Clein, who was currently poring over the Knights' reports with a grimace.

「Have you discovered anything about the monster breeding?」

「Only that the area affected by miasma is broader than anticipated. It's proven to be a troublesome request. I can see why His Majesty brought it to us so early. If we don't purify the miasma as soon as possible, the monsters may very well continue to multiply.」

「That’s not good. We're still dealing with the herb shortage, so if monsters keep breeding at this rate, it's going to cause problems on multiple fronts.」

Last time, we dealt with a potion deficit and magic academy students getting caught in the fray; even a single outbreak caused a massive uproar.

If it happens a second or third time, public anxiety in the capital will skyrocket, leading to a breakdown in public order. Merchants might start avoiding the city, which could cause logistics to grind to a halt.

No matter how hard the Knights work, if the herb shortage worsens again, the breeding monsters will eventually gain the upper hand... Just thinking about it gave me the chills.

「That is merely a possibility. We must stop it before it reaches that point.」

「It seems we've accepted quite the daunting task. Was the miasma the original cause of this outbreak as well?」

「We shouldn't jump to conclusions. It's also possible that the miasma was generated *as a result* of the monster population exploding. I suppose you could say the purpose of our investigation is to find out which came first.」

Just as I was starting to get a headache from all the complexity, the workshop door swung open and Leon returned.

However, something was off. He was lugging a much larger load than expected, and his face was deathly pale.

「I have an ominous feeling. This request might be dangerous.」

「Wh-what happened?」

「When I told Lady Barbaril that I’d be working on the King's request together with you and Master Clein, she suddenly became... incredibly generous...」

Ah... that pattern. I know that feeling well, having received a mountain of magic ore myself as a "congratulatory gift" for becoming an apprentice.

Leon looked like he was in utter disbelief that the eccentric, stingy Obaba-sama would ever give away a "present" out of the goodness of her heart.

Judging by the "I've just survived a horror movie" look on his face, he must have received some exceptionally high-quality items.

「It seems she's just in that kind of phase. She gave me a little extra out of the goodness of her heart recently, too.」

Curious about the load Leon had brought back, I checked the contents... and found them packed with monster materials I'd never even seen before and a hoard of precious ores.

To be honest, "goodness of her heart" didn't quite cover this. It was no wonder Leon was trying to escape reality.

I could almost hear Obaba-sama’s distinctive *hee-hee-hee* echoing in the background.

「Just what is happening to the Royal Capital?」

I wanted to point out that his scale of worry was a bit too grand, but considering the capital was currently dealing with a monster crisis, he wasn't exactly wrong.

「All the more reason to make these purification potions and investigate.」

Forcing the conversation back on track, I began lining up the necessary materials on the table to learn the crafting process.

Master Clein stepped forward and picked up a Sacred Mana Stone.

「As a preliminary step for the purification potion, we must first use a Sacred Mana Stone to generate Holy Water. For that, we'll need—」

「The Enchantment skill!」

「Exactly. Originally, I intended to teach you myself... but Leon, why don't you show Mia how to perform an Enchantment?」

Leon, suddenly thrust into the spotlight, was snapped back to reality.

「M-me?」

「Yes. As an Enchantment specialist, you'll likely be a better teacher than I would.」

「That might be true, but... I've never taught anyone before.」

「Teaching someone else is an excellent opportunity to re-examine your own skills. If it goes well, you might even find a hint on how to control the Bracelet of Power. It's a worthwhile experience.」

I still didn't fully grasp their history, but Master Clein clearly cared about Leon's growth. He was looking out for both of us, hoping we'd improve through this request.

Leon, however, couldn't hide his bewilderment at this sudden new task.

「W-would that be alright with you... Mia-sama?」

「Yes. I certainly won't complain about being taught. I have friends who are commoners, so please don't worry about my status. You can just treat me normally.」

「Ah, I thought so! Your way of speaking was felt strangely close to a commoner's, so I was curious. Phew~ that’s a relief.」

I tilted my head as I watched Leon let out a sigh as if a massive weight had been lifted from his shoulders.

(Wait... am I losing my noble dignity?)

Well, it was never really there to begin with, so I guess it's fine. It's much better than being seen as unapproachable.

Still, even as I thought that, I made a mental note to act a bit more dignified when in the presence of higher-ranking nobles.
