I Shall Break Off Our Engagement For You
[Chapter 4]
Translated by: ME
One day, Maisie's poem was selected as an excellent work in class.
"Congratulations, Maisie."
"Felicia's poems are always wonderful, but Maisie's poem this time was really good."
"Especially the melancholy scene at the beginning, I was drawn in."
She started to say, "The second half is...", but trailed off vaguely.
To be honest, the second half, or rather, everything except the beginning, was unreadable.
It was as if someone else had written it.
Maisie, who had everyone's attention, abandoned her usual timid demeanor and smiled confidently, as if it were a lie.
As if being chosen was a normal occurrence, as if it was only natural, she raised her chin and said "Thank you" with a haughty air.
"How did you write such a wonderful scene?"
She tilted her head, basking in the fervent praise.
"I don't know. I don't even know myself."
Everyone nodded in admiration.
"She's just like her cousin."
"Felicia always gets good grades, which is amazing."
"I guess this is what they mean when they say blood is thicker than water."
In reality, Maisie and Felicia weren't related by blood, but the people around them didn't know that, so they said things like that.
Maisie had somehow ended up standing next to Felicia.
It was a coincidence, but they were standing in the center of the classroom circle.
Everyone's eyes naturally gathered on them, and even though Felicia didn't intend it, she felt like she was standing on a slightly elevated platform.
Maisie, looking around at everyone and puffing out her chest, looked surprisingly triumphant.
Felicia was well-liked in the school, or rather, she could get along with anyone and had many friends, so perhaps she was happy to be recognized in the same category.
But...
Even so, why does she look so triumphant?
Felicia looked at Maisie next to her with dubious feelings.
Maisie is a hard person to understand.
She always clings to Felicia and treats Felicia's friends as if they were her own.
Normally, it would be very pleasing for close friends to become friendly with other friends.
However, in Maisie's case, for some reason, Felicia felt uncomfortable, though she couldn't quite put her finger on why.
Perhaps it's because she thinks it might cause trouble for everyone.
Maisie would timidly ask, "Can I come too?" to tea parties at friends' houses that had been planned in advance with a set number of people.
When everyone had other plans, she would invite them to a picnic by the sea that weekend, and when several people declined, she would look extremely hurt, yet desperately ask, "Well, how about next week?"
In the end, everyone would give in to her persistent invitations, and they would go on the unplanned picnic by the sea.
It would be fun enough once they got there, so it wouldn't become a big problem, but somehow their pace would be disrupted, and their next appointment would be further apart.
It wasn't enough to say she was a nuisance, but she was subtly presumptuous.
Felicia was often given hints of the feeling that while people were considerate of Felicia, they also resented Maisie.
