I Shall Break Off Our Engagement For You
[Chapter 2]
Translated by: ME
Silas, who belonged to the Royal Knights, had companions named Toby and Neil.
Both were the second sons of viscount families and possessed sword skills comparable to Silas.
In other words, they belonged to a relatively skilled group, but their abilities were not quite enough to win tournaments such as the Royal Matches; a rather mediocre level of skill.
On the way back from weekly worship, during a leisurely stroll (promenade) along Park Street to the carriage pool, they often gossiped about the people in the Knights.
Since becoming engaged to Silas, Felicia had been walking with them more often and had begun to hear these stories.
Naturally, Maisie was listening along as well.
"That Barney Ashfield, he's so full of himself, even though he's not that skilled."
Toby spat out, and Neil agreed.
"What does he think he's doing, giving Silas advice?"
"He's probably flaunting his close relationship with Prince Kevin."
Prince Kevin was likely referring to His Highness Kevin, the second prince of our Kingdom of Auckland.
He is twenty years old this year and belongs to the Royal Knights, and is a strong swordsman alongside Adrian Weiss.
The gossip was mostly about someone's faults, and recently, Barney of the Ashfield Earldom had been particularly targeted.
It seemed they didn't like that he had offered Silas his opinion, even though his swordsmanship was equal to or below theirs, and he was two years younger.
He even told Felicia and Maisie, "He's got personality issues, so you shouldn't associate with him."
Felicia, who knew Barney personally, silently ignored what they said.
She didn't feel it was worth arguing about, but she had no intention of complying either.
Maisie was different.
She would say things like, "It's terrible to say such things," and "I won't be friendly with Barney at all in the future," to show that she was on Silas's side.
"I won't go to any gatherings that Barney attends. Of course, I won't go to the party this weekend either."
She even brought up the topic of a party she hadn't been invited to, just to say it.
Felicia was planning to go to that party.
The Ashfield Earldom and the Airheart Marquisate had a long-standing business relationship, and Felicia had been invited to the party being held at the Ashfield residence next weekend.
She hadn't intended to mention it, but when Silas said he wanted to make plans for a date next weekend, she told him, "I have a party on the weekend."
Maisie asked, "That's... the Ashfield residence...?" in a seemingly frightened manner.
Felicia replied with a short, "Yes," and Silas frowned.
"Felicia... You were listening to what we were saying just now, right? Yet, you're going to Barney's house for a party?"
Felicia felt that it was a separate matter.
So, she ended up expressing her opinion.
"I've known Barney for a long time, but I don't think he has any particular personality issues."
It was the truth.
Since their fathers had been associated for over ten years, she had known Barney, who was two years older, well since childhood.
He was cheerful and energetic, and sometimes got carried away, but she had always liked him as a good-natured older brother figure.
"Barney isn't such a bad person, you know?"
"Felicia... you're Silas's fiancée, but you're taking Barney's side...?"
Maisie asked with a sad face.
She clasped her hands in front of her chest as if praying.
"It's not about taking sides."
"But Silas has been treated terribly by Barney...?"
Terribly?
Is giving a little advice during sword practice terrible?
Felicia was confused, but Maisie stared at her as if she couldn't understand.
"Felicia, Silas isn't important to you, is he...?"
Why does it come to that?
Felicia felt a slight irritation, but Maisie turned her back to Felicia after that.
She didn't feel like making her turn around and explaining the details.
Even if she did explain, Felicia vaguely sensed from past experience that Maisie wouldn't understand at all.
