Exhausted Mana

My face was illuminated by a dazzling light, and I lifted my heavy eyelids and woke up.

The sight reflected in my eyes was the castle wall visible from the window, the spacious ceiling, and Vanessa-san peering down at me.

「How do you feel?」

「I feel sick. My body is heavy, and I'm incredibly depressed.」

I was briefly wondering why I was in this state... but seeing the knights moving in a hurry, I quickly understood my situation. I had collapsed from exhaustion while making the EX Potion.

「Did you have enough potions?」

「Thanks to you, yes. But right now, you should worry about yourself more than others. You were doing alchemy until your mana was completely depleted.」

「That's why I thought I was feeling unwell. So this is what it feels like when your mana is depleted.」

「Normally, you'd stop before it gets to this point... but you're an apprentice, and it's partly my responsibility too.」

Vanessa-san, whose voice grew softer, wore a very apologetic expression.

It was an emergency, and since she hadn't been informed of the potion's manufacturing method, there were many aspects that couldn't be helped. Moreover, since it wasn't Vanessa-san's fault, I couldn't blame her.

「It was my own doing. Please don't worry about it.」

「Is that the kind of person you are, Mia-chan? It would actually help me if you scolded me here.」

「I don't have that kind of hobby.」

Due to my poor physical condition, I unintentionally strongly denied Vanessa-san's words.

At that, Vanessa-san slumped like a withered flower.

「I'm truly sorry. I never thought Mia-chan would keep going until she collapsed, and I never dreamed you had family members in the Knights’ Order.」

I wasn't angry, and I understood why Vanessa-san was apologizing. But because of that, it was throwing me off balance.

「Are you really Vanessa-san? You're being incredibly serious.」

「If it develops into a major problem, I will apologize. I am the Sub-Master of the Alchemists Guild, after all.」

「You always say that and then joke around, though.」

「Oh, come on. I'm always serious. Mia-chan, you're the type to toy with people's feelings, aren't you?」

「That's the point.」

Vanessa-san, who cutely stuck out her tongue with an 'oops' expression, finally returned to her usual self.

To be precise, it would be more correct to say that she let herself return. She made sure to apologize and then changed her approach while observing my condition. She was also serious when she came to request the emergency order, so she might be surprisingly thoughtful.

「By the way, is it alright if I ask for detailed information about the Knights' Order?」

「Yes. Well, the damage wasn't zero, but the casualties were far fewer than expected.」

「I see. That's a relief—」

「So, how did you make that potion?」

Vanessa-san, whose eyes sparkled, was quick to change the subject.

「From a quick look, it felt close to a Middle Potion. But in reality, it's different. Not only does it help wounds heal, but it surprisingly recovers fatigue, and it's become the talk of the knights.」

Not a trace of her slumped, apologetic mood remained. She was completely her usual Vanessa-san.

Although I wanted to dig deeper for more details about the EX Potion, it would be better to consult Lord Clein about Divine Alchemy. I didn't understand why it was distinguished from general alchemy, or why no one but Obaba-sama knew about it. I didn't want the potion to become a major topic of conversation out of mere curiosity.

「That potion is... the result of hard work.」

Therefore, I decided to handle it with a very clumsy evasion. Vanessa-san physically scooted closer, but I kept my emotional distance.

「You don't have to dodge the question. Aren't you and I friends, Mia-chan?」

「I don't have an image of us being that close.」

「That's cruel. We're close enough to talk at the Alchemists Guild.」

「It was just work between us. I don't recall any private interactions. But thank you for taking care of me.」

「You're welcome... is what I want to say, but I just came to check on you. I apologize if I intruded.」

Just as I was wondering what she was talking about, the door to the room was knocked upon, and Lord Clein entered.

Seeing Vanessa-san's smug smile and wink, and Lord Clein, who had dark circles under his eyes, I somehow grasped the situation.

Lord Clein, who must have been exhausted from making potions with me, must have been nursing me. As a result, Vanessa-san misunderstood and was making a big fuss over it by herself.

「You're awake. How do you feel?」

「Not very well, but I am fully conscious.」

「I see. In that state, it looks like only three days of rest would suffice, but you should probably rest for a week just to be safe.」

「Eh? Will it take that long for this symptom to recover?」

「Even veteran mages and alchemists take care for three days if their mana is depleted. In Mia's case... you should be extra careful.」

It seemed he wanted to keep the matter of Divine Alchemy a secret after all. Lord Clein glanced at Vanessa-san and intentionally spoke vaguely.

「Understood. I think it would cause more trouble if I tried to rush back to work, so I'll stay quiet for a while. Honestly, I don't want to move from here right now.」

「I thought so. I've also depleted my mana a few times, and it was enough to make even talking tedious.」

「That's right, I understand the feeling. It's like a really bad day of the month for girls—」

「Please stop with the strange comparisons! Do you have no tact, Vanessa-san?!」

I couldn't possibly sympathize with such a blatant comparison, especially with Lord Clein right here! Honestly.

「I'm going to sleep some more, so Lord Clein, please rest too.」

「Yes. I'll do that.」

「Then maybe I'll rest with Mia-chan too.」

「Vanessa-san, please go to work. The Alchemists Guild is calling you.」

I felt like I was being a little harsh, but I couldn't help being irritable with my mana depleted.

I knew I was sulking, and not wanting to show them this face, I pulled the blanket over my head and decided to sleep.
