I was reincarnated into another world and became a witch so I want to live a slow life but the Demon King won't let me go.
[What she means to them]
Translated by: ME
「Precious Master」
I'm Yuri. My name was given to me by my Master.
My Master is the one who saved me—a person who was shunned by everyone around me and had no choice but to be abandoned and die. My life is nothing special, just an ordinary story.
Memories from when I was a baby, which I normally shouldn't remember, remain vividly. It seems that I have a good memory, perhaps because I'm a little different besides my appearance.
I told my Master that I was an orphan, but in reality, I had parents, though only for a short time. My parents were an ordinary couple in a small farming village. I was their third child, and for parents who weren't wealthy, I was an unnecessary child to begin with. What's more, I had rare and undesirable black hair.
My parents and siblings all had normal hair colors, so the doctor said it was either an ancestral throwback or a mutation. My father seemed to suspect my mother of infidelity, but my facial features were exactly like my father's, so there's no doubt we were related. Even so, I was an unwanted child.
Without even being given a name, one day when I turned three, I was abandoned in front of an orphanage at a church a little ways away. I suppose I should be grateful that I wasn't killed, since infanticide is a major crime.
Even at the orphanage, I was a nuisance. A child with a hair color resembling a demon wouldn't be welcomed in a place where people prayed to God. I was forced to do the dirty work that no one else wanted to do, and I grew up sleeping on a cold stone floor with only the bare minimum of food. I don't know how I didn't die.
When I reached the age where I could work, it was common for me to be taken in by workshops or merchants as a live-in worker, but no one wanted me.
One day, just before I reached the age limit for staying at the church as an orphan, a traveling group said they wanted to take me in. Normally, orphans wouldn't be handed over to people with unknown backgrounds, but the church was happy to get rid of me.
The group was a band of rogues who made money by doing things that bordered on thievery and traveled from place to place. As expected, I wasn't given a name and was dragged around as a handyman and decoy. There were many times when I almost died.
There were many things that I couldn't tell my Master. I am a very tainted creature.
And then I finally broke. I had a fever that wouldn't go down for days, and I couldn't carry luggage or even keep up. I was prepared to be abandoned, sold, or even killed, as I had become a huge burden. My life had been devoid of anything enjoyable. I had no regrets about it ending; in fact, I was relieved that it was finally over.
It was my Master who picked me up. Not only did they nurse me and treat my wounds, but they also gave me warm meals, clean clothes, and even a name. For the first time, I was grateful to someone. They taught me what kindness is.
I was embarrassed to call them by their name, so I called them "Master," and they were a little surprised and shy, but they accepted it.
They taught me many things that I didn't know: the warmth and kindness of people, happy and fun things, reading, writing, arithmetic, cooking, and how to make medicine. Negotiating with people and how to do business. Interacting with others, which had only been a source of fear, became enjoyable.
Here, no one treats me as an unwanted child. They treat me as an equal human being. All of this is because of my Master's existence.
My kind, beautiful, slightly mysterious, and warm Master. No matter how many years I'm by their side, they don't age, and sometimes they don't know things about the world that even I know. They're probably not a normal human being. Even so, they're still the most important person to me.
I've decided to protect this person with my life. No matter what happens. The most important person of all.
「Chosen Existence」
I am Dian. I grew up as a knight. Now I live in a small village doing odd jobs and such.
Born as the youngest son of a middle-class noble family in the Empire, I received a divine revelation and blessing from the gods at my baptism. The blessing is a special power granted by the gods to become their sword in times of emergency and fight against the demons.
It has long been the rule that all those who possess the blessing must serve in the temple and become priests or holy knights. I was entrusted to the temple at a young age and grew up training as a knight because of my talent for martial arts. I could imitate almost anything after seeing it once, and I never found anything difficult.
I think I was treated very well as a prodigy with a strong blessing. However, I didn't feel any emotion towards any of it. I didn't feel sad about being separated from my parents, nor did I feel any affection for the adults around me who took care of me and educated me. That's because I knew that they were all treating me as an existence for the sake of their own interests and money.
Those who possess the blessing of the gods are rare. For the family, their name would be sold as a family that produced a blessed one, and they could obtain money and goods in exchange for me. For the temple, if they could embrace a blessed one, it would be easier to justify their actions in the name of God, and faith and donations would gather. The truth of this world is that adults, stained with dirty interests in the name of God, are doing as they please.
Even after I came of age and officially became a holy knight, that didn't improve. Power and money are needed to do the right thing, and even a holy knight with a blessing is treated as an ornament by higher-ranking priests to add prestige to their own existence.
Until a divine revelation is given by the gods, I have no special power. Yet people admire me as a holy knight. I spend my days deflecting them with a fabricated smile. Just a listless, unmotivated life.
One day, I received an order to find medicine because a high-ranking priest had fallen ill. It was a miracle drug that had flowed in from a certain country. It was said that it could cure any wound or disease in an instant, but it was rarely distributed and was incredibly expensive. He had many messengers search for it, but they could only get rumors that it was being sold near that country.
I wondered if it was something that required dragging out a blessed one, but it was an instruction that came from the misguided idea that I would be able to find it because I was blessed. I didn't have a shred of interest in that priest, but if I didn't comply, my position in the temple would become precarious and uncomfortable. Some might be born who would underestimate me, thinking that even a blessed one is only that capable. Like the others, I went on a journey only to protect myself.
When I left the Empire and went out into the outside world, it was surprisingly vast, and everyone was free. It was too fresh of an experience for me, who had lived in the narrow world of the temple.
As if guided by something, I learned of an existence called "witch's medicine" in a distant foreign country, searched for the store, and arrived at the creator. And then I met her.
The moment I met her, I knew she was a demon. A calm, warm, and beautiful existence that was completely different from the image of demons I had been taught. The blessing within me conveyed that, but no divine revelation was given to subjugate her. Even though she was a demon, she treated me kindly and willingly shared the medicine with me. It was an event that overturned my values from the ground up.
Holding onto a fluffy, mysterious feeling, I returned to the temple. What awaited me when I brought back the medicine was a terrible welcome from the priest who wanted to cover up the fact that I had been involved with a witch.
As soon as his illness was cured, he asked me about the origin of the medicine in order to make money from it, and his attitude changed completely. I was falsely accused of being involved with a demon despite being a holy knight and was imprisoned. Some of the people who had been silenced with money were trying to force an execution before they were exposed.
Suddenly, nothing mattered anymore. I wanted to be by the side of that kind demon, rather than the filthy people in the temple. I broke out of the temple, and when I visited the witch's house again, I was only amazed by her intelligence.
When I forcibly lived nearby, I was surprised at how readily she was accepted and cherished by the people, and her way of cherishing the people was like a legendary saint. She doesn't realize it, but thanks to what she has created, not only the village but also the town has developed, and everyone's lives have become prosperous. Yet, strangely, there is no unrest, and this place is peaceful.
Before I knew it, I had been accepted too. I didn't know that interacting with people without regard for profit and being grateful and appreciated could feel so good.
She is not just a demon. She is probably a chosen, noble being. I even had the conviction that I had received the blessing to protect her.
It was the first time I had ever sincerely thanked God for meeting someone worthy of dedicating my life to.
「Mine」
I'm the Demon King. As the king of the demons, I rule the place where they live.
I was able to wield powerful magical power from the time I was born, and after I grew up, I defeated the guy who was the Demon King and became the Demon King.
My subordinates, who were born as my familiars, take care of some of the work, so my job is to beat down those who oppose me for no reason and to stabilize the magical elements that are the source of magical power. It's an easy job because it's said that it stabilizes just by me, the Demon King, exerting my power.
One day, the atmosphere in my castle began to change. That's because a strange female demon started a job called "secretary." Even though she didn't need to eat, she made strange things called "sweets" and fed them to me.
The tea and sweets time was sweet and warm, and it was my favorite. The people around me are just afraid of me, but she treats me with strangely cold eyes. Yet, if I ask her, she solves problems, and even though she says things that I don't understand, her stories are interesting. The inside of the castle was strangely comfortable, and I couldn't help but have fun.
But suddenly, she disappeared. Suddenly, the sweets don't taste good, and I can't settle down inside the castle. My subordinates also seem to be troubled, and I'm getting frustrated.
What in the world is wrong with me, even though only that small, unsexy, and uninteresting existence has disappeared?
When I vented such dissatisfaction to Mira, who is my favorite, she said with a dumbfounded look: "Oh my. You were so fond of her, but she ran away?"
Ran away. Those words felt like a lightning bolt had struck my head. That's right, I'm angry because that was supposed to be mine, but she ran away.
Realizing the truth, I decided to go look for her. I've never cared about anything other than my familiars or my favorite women before. But, you're different, Miya.
I'll definitely bring you back.
