I Shall Break Off Our Engagement For You

[Chapter 40]

Translated by: ME

The next afternoon, Rachel and Felicia were invited to tea by Mrs. Weiss.

When they were led into Mrs. Weiss's private room in the palace, the only people there besides her and her maid were her maids.

Rachel and Felicia were tense and stiff, and the lady gently said to them, [Please relax.]

[Felicia, I was told that you can't write poetry anymore. I heard Rachel is struggling with it too.]

He looked at the two of them in pain.

[Only those who have experienced the same thing can understand your pain. Even if you tell them the truth, most people will just think, 'That's all?.']

[It must have been painful, not only because you felt so frustrated, but also because you couldn't express that frustration.]

Rachel and Felicia nodded with tight lips.

[But now I feel a little better.]

Rachel spoke with a small smile.

Felicia smiled as well.

I felt relieved when I heard her comments.

I felt like I was being acknowledged that I wasn't narrow-minded, and that I wasn't holding a grudge over something so insignificant.

The lady nodded and told me that before last night's ball, she had spoken with the royal family about the content and author of the recommended poem.

[The representatives of the royal family and the school's board of directors who were present at the meeting told me to keep the general and individual comments inoffensive and to confirm the facts at a later date.]

But she already knew all too well that Maisie had copied what she had written.

I had also confirmed the fact of imitation with other poets.

Everyone expressed outrage and agreed that such a thing should never have been released to the public.

[I argued that this should be touched upon in the commentary, as it relates to the attitude towards poetry writing.]

The school's directors had troubled expressions on their faces.

As in previous years, I persisted, thinking it would be best to have the students hold the flowers at the ball and enjoy a pleasant time.

But then Kevin said he knew at least two other students who had had expressions stolen from Maisie in the same way.

One of them said that since that incident he has not been able to write poetry.

He told the board members he agreed with Mrs. Weiss, arguing that honoring students who steal would hurt the students whose things were stolen from even more.

And he apparently strongly argued that the royal family should not tolerate it.

Felicia's eyes widened as she looked at her husband.

(So, instead of being able to stop the lady, Kevin actually pushed her to do it...?)

After being stunned for a moment, a faint smile suddenly appeared on his face.

I was glad that Kevin truly understood Felicia's pain and was on her side.

[I want to lend a hand to people who are truly in need and who are weak. However, I feel a strong aversion to people who pretend to be weak, who pretend not to understand or notice, who don't mind relying on others, who don't try to stand up for themselves, and who are dependent on others.]

Creativity reflects a person's way of life.

Mrs. Weiss said that to create something beautiful, you need a beautiful mind and a beautiful eye.

[Even if you brazenly rely on others and steal their success, if you don't have the strength to match the status you've achieved, it will be obvious to everyone.]

He said that if Maisie wanted to continue writing poetry, she would have to start by facing her own baseness, her own shame, her own ugliness.

[That's when you start honing your sense of beauty.]

Rachel and Felicia straightened up when they heard about his sense of beauty and lifestyle.

The lady smiles brightly.

[It's nothing serious. Don't be so nervous.]

Don't do anything bad, dishonest or shameless.

Don't have any strange desires.

Don't brag about your achievements.

Don't look down on people.

The lady says, counting her fingers.

It's all just such obvious things.

Don't do anything ugly or vulgar, and that is also a fine aesthetic.

[The rest is to love and believe in your life. You don't have to be right all the time, as long as you're prepared to take responsibility for your actions and the way you live. It's okay to be mean sometimes.]

I repeat that being correct alone is not enough.

What is right is generally beautiful, but being right alone is not enough.

He says it's important to be honest with yourself and have the courage to make your own decisions.

[In the end, it's largely a matter of feeling. What is beautiful is different for each individual.]

But that was fine, the lady said, smiling.

[If you can understand what's 'normal' when you think 'this is not normal', then I feel like you have the same aesthetic sense. I want to be with people like that.]
