I Shall Break Off Our Engagement For You

[Chapter 24]

Translated by: ME

Felicia left the room, and Nicholas Erhardt secretly sighed in relief.

When the Haymer family, another marquis house, proposed to send Silas as an adopted son-in-law, Nicholas made his decision based solely on the obvious conditions.

He had been regretting that decision ever since.

He should have investigated more thoroughly.

At the time, the Erhardt family was not looking for a bride for Felicia, but a [son-in-law] to inherit the house. If they had intended to marry her off, Barney Ashfield was available.

If a suitable son-in-law for Felicia could not be found, they were considering marrying Felicia to Barney and finding a son-in-law for Rosemary.

It was at such a time that the Haymer family brought up the matter.

From the beginning, they had requested the engagement on the condition that Silas would be sent as an adopted son-in-law.

Silas was a member of the Royal Knights, and four years older than Felicia. To join the Royal Knights, one needed a handsome appearance, swordsmanship, and common sense, so being a knight proved that these qualities were present.

In fact, when they met, he was a very ordinary, pleasant young man. There was nothing to criticize, and Nicholas was relieved and happy that a son-in-law who met his standards had finally appeared.

It was after Felicia and Silas's engagement was settled that he learned the Haymer family had a large debt.

That was also a problem, but Nicholas was secretly dissatisfied with Silas's attitude towards it.

The Haymer family appeared to be very well-off at first glance.

This was because the whole family was fond of luxury and loved to show off.

The debt seemed to have been created as a result of living beyond their means.

Their mansion and income-generating territories were already mortgaged, and they seemed to be taking out new loans to repay them in order to avoid losing them.

Even though they had two sons below him, the fact that they offered to send Silas, the eldest son, as an adopted son-in-law meant that the Haymer family had been counting on the Erhardt family's support from the beginning. He regretted that he should have been more suspicious, but it was too late.

As soon as the engagement was settled, the Haymer family immediately approached them for a loan through Silas.

Nicholas questioned lending money that would never be returned. Support and investment are made because there is a prospect of recovery or growth on the receiving end. Otherwise, it should not be done.

He wanted to ask if the Haymer family had any intention of making an effort.

He felt sorry for questioning only Silas, who was acting as an intermediary, but Silas was the man who would succeed him and steer the Erhardt family. He expected him to stand in the middle and bring back an answer that both parties could agree on.

The expectation remained just that, an expectation.

Silas simply repeated, as if it were someone else's problem, that his father was saying he wanted them to lend him money because he didn't have any.

It was clear as day that he felt humiliated by having to bow his head.

[That's not it,] Nicholas wanted to say.

He was telling them that if they could come up with a strategy and show a concrete path on how they intended to rebuild the Haymer family, he would do what he could, but he gnashed his teeth in frustration that this was not getting through.

He knew it wasn't Silas's sole responsibility.

He had things he wanted to say to Marquis and Marchioness Haymer themselves.

Frankly speaking, Nicholas was disappointed in the entire Haymer family.

Even so, he had been proceeding with the marriage to Felicia because he thought Felicia herself liked Silas.

Silas also seemed to care about Felicia.

They were blessed by those around them and seemed happy.

Marriages between nobles often involve family circumstances.

Nicholas had also set many conditions for Felicia's marriage.

However, on the other hand, he had no intention of forcing her into a marriage that would make her unhappy.

He had no intention of entrusting his precious daughter to a man who was reluctantly becoming an adopted son-in-law for the sake of money.

Moreover, if he preferred Maisie, that girl who was always leaning on others, then he could do as he pleased.
