I Shall Break Off Our Engagement For You
[Chapter 9]
Translated by: ME
"Maisie's poem was selected for the 'Grain Newspaper's' poetry corner this month."
"Oh, I saw her name listed as a reference work too."
On Monday, when I entered the classroom, the young ladies interested in poetry were gathered and talking.
These included Cathy from the Viscount Alcott family, Brittany from the Baron Maclay family, and Rachel from the Earl Winter family.
"That newspaper's poetry corner is a bit low-level, though."
When Brittany said that, Rachel cautioned, "Even so, not just anyone gets selected."
Brittany, apparently remembering that Rachel had been selected for the previous month's excellence award, followed up with, "The excellence award is different."
When they saw Felicia's face, everyone said in unison, "Blood will tell."
I've been told that many times, but I rarely have the opportunity to deny it.
I don't feel like it's something I need to bring up on purpose.
But, in reality, Felicia and Maisie are not blood-related.
They are so-called cousins by marriage.
Maisie became Felicia's cousin four years ago, just as she was entering her upperclassman year.
There were many daughters entering the academy from the provinces, so she didn't stand out much, and since I didn't bother to mention it, no one knows the details.
However, Maisie had not even attended the academy when she was in the lower classes, so that was the first time Felicia had met Maisie.
Felicia's mother's youngest brother is the adopted son of the Goddard family and the current Baron Goddard.
His wife, who was a daughter of the Goddard family, died soon after giving birth to a daughter.
Several years later, Baron Goddard remarried, and his new wife was Maisie's mother.
Maisie was her child from a previous marriage and was fourteen years old at the time.
Agnes, who was born between the mother's brother and the daughter of the Goddart family, is eight years younger, and was six years old at the time.
She is now ten years old, four years later.
She is the same age as my younger sister Rosemary.
The older Maisie is the first daughter of the Goddard family, but due to blood relations, Agnes has the inheritance rights.
Even though they were not blood-related, her mother told her to "get along since you're cousins now," and they started attending the new school building for upperclassmen together.
Maisie introduced herself to everyone as "Felicia's cousin" from the beginning, so everyone treats Maisie with that understanding.
Felicia had no reason to deny Maisie's words.
Since then, Maisie has always been near Felicia.
"It seems Maisie is aiming to become a royal court poet."
Rachel said.
"Ehh, isn't that impossible?"
"Unlike Felicia, Maisie doesn't have that much talent, right?"
When Brittany and Cathy laughed, Maisie entered the classroom.
She was about to head to her seat with a stiff expression, but when Rachel said, "Congratulations," her eyes gleamed, and she came over to everyone.
"That's amazing, Maisie."
"You've been working hard lately."
When everyone said that, Maisie puffed out her chest proudly, sniffing.
"Only your name was in the newspaper, so please show us what kind of poem it was next time."
"Eh..."
"I want to see it too."
"Please, show us."
For some reason, Maisie looked embarrassed and turned away, saying, "I forgot which poem I submitted."
It was a strange reaction.
Cathy changed the subject and started talking about a small goods store that had opened on the outskirts of the noble district.
"I really liked 'Little Abbey,' which Maisie told me about the other day."
"I went there too. It's a cute shop."
"Maisie has good taste."
The three praised Maisie one after another.
"How did you find a place like that?"
Maisie sniffed again and said, "I just happened to see it while walking."
Felicia was surprised and looked at Maisie's face.
Maisie smiled innocently.
"You're good at finding nice shops just by the atmosphere of the storefront."
"Maisie has an eye for things."
I think to myself, 'That's not true,' as I look at her smiling profile.
I wonder how many times this has happened.
All the shops that Maisie tells everyone about are shops that Felicia found.
Not just shops, but also theatrical performances, exciting books, and various other pieces of information are all things that Felicia has passed on.
Maisie never mentions that she heard it from Felicia.
It's not like I'm going to make a fuss about something like that, and it's really nothing to worry about.
But, for example, if the situation were reversed, Felicia would add a word, "I learned about this from Maisie."
It's not that I want credit, but I would probably do it without thinking.
It's really trivial and silly.
Felicia may be narrow-minded, but Maisie's behavior sometimes makes her feel uneasy.
