I Shall Break Off Our Engagement For You

[Chapter 27]

Translated by: ME

The rumor that Felicia and Silas's engagement had been called off spread like wildfire through society and among their friends at the academy, especially since they had been seen as a well-matched couple.

Felicia herself felt refreshed, but the reactions around her were different.

She felt sorry for them, as if they were handling her with kid gloves, as if she were a sore spot.

[Everyone, don't worry about me.]

[But...]

[Really, I'm totally fine.]

She tried to smile cheerfully, but it wasn't easily understood.

It was no wonder, since there had been a time when everyone had blessed them, and Felicia herself had been happy.

Only time will tell.

Thinking so, she left things to flow naturally.

The announcement of her engagement to Barney might be after the graduation ceremony, but she had been told that she could tell close friends about it when the time was right.

She felt it was still too early to say anything, but she intended to tell Rachel and the others before graduation.

She knew that would put everyone at ease, so she wasn't in a hurry and took her time.

The engagement between Barney and her had been under consideration between both families for some time. It was in a state where it could be arranged at any time if they wanted to.

They were proceeding relatively slowly, planning to announce it around mid-July, after the academy's graduation ceremony, out of consideration that it would be rude to Silas if they decided too quickly.

Even so, a new engagement would be arranged in just about three weeks.

The Airheart family was somewhat pained by the thought that they might cause him some embarrassment.

In the midst of all this, Silas and Maisie's engagement was announced.

Suddenly, without any warning.

[What is the meaning of this?]

When her angry father questioned Baron Goddard through her mother, he was surprised to learn that even the baron didn't know.

Everyone was shocked.

[It seems my wife knew. She lacks common sense, or rather, she's completely incapable of the consideration that one would normally give... Sister, I'm truly sorry...]

Her kind-hearted and weak-willed uncle apparently did nothing but bow his head repeatedly.

Did Maisie not realize that her future father-in-law was feeling so embarrassed in front of his relatives?

Maisie stood in the middle of the classroom, beaming and puffing out her chest proudly, as if she had won Silas.

She seemed to be waiting for the words of congratulations that she would naturally receive, but only a few inconspicuous students who weren't very close to Felicia and her friends spoke to her.

[Not only poetry and various information, but even someone's fiancé, stealing everything, she's really despicable and brazen,] Rachel said resentfully.

But Felicia felt something was off.

Silas hadn't been stolen. Felicia had been the one to break off the relationship with Silas first.

To be honest, she didn't care who Silas got engaged to.

However, strangely enough, Maisie, who always said that she had only [referred to] the poetry that she had probably stolen and never admitted her guilt, acted as if she had snatched Silas away.

When her eyes met Felicia's, she made a somewhat apologetic face and then smiled as if asking for forgiveness.

Why would she act that way when she hadn't really stolen him?

[Maisie, that's awful...]

[Poor Felicia...]

Cathy and Brittany looked at Felicia with pity in their eyes.

Felicia was surprised.

(Poor me? Why?)

But she tried to think objectively about how it looked from the outside.

Felicia might look like a poor person whose fiancé had been stolen by her cousin Maisie.

Felicia looked at Maisie standing in the middle of the classroom.

Abandoning her usual docile attitude, she looked around with an unusually confident expression. Her eyes sparkled with joy.

Only those involved know what the facts are.

About the poetry, and about Silas.

For Maisie, the facts and the truth didn't matter.

What was important was being noticed by people and being paid attention to...

Maisie always wanted someone to pay attention to her.

She wanted to be noticed and fawned over, even if she had to use any means to do it...

Felicia think everyone has the desire to be liked and praised.

They want a place to belong and to have their existence acknowledged. Those are very natural desires.

But in order to do that, isn't it important to stand on your own two feet first?

Isn't it necessary to feel and think about things with your own heart and mind?

It seems like no one will acknowledge you as long as you're leaning on someone else and taking it easy.
