In my previous life, which was full of entertainment, I loved games, manga, and novels.
I basically liked things that didn't require much brainpower.
I mean, it's 'entertainment,' so I think it's fine if it's just 'fun'. I hear there are games in the world that are like ascetic practices, but I don't really understand the mentality of people who play those.
Elizabeth-sama said with a straight face, 「It's 'tension and release'. After the ascetic practice, there's the pleasure of trampling everything underfoot.」 But, 'trampling everything underfoot'...? And that's 'pleasure'...?
...Is it really alright for this person to be the 'Queen Consort'? Isn't she a bit too belligerent...?
Putting that aside, I'm not good at games that impose such ascetic practices.
I'm also not good at games that require a lot of thinking. And while I'm at it, I'm bad at action games too. I'm the type whose whole body moves along with the controller; long ago, I actually pulled the cord too hard and broke it while playing that super famous overall-wearing plumber's side-scrolling action game.
Being that kind of person, games where you read text and click choices... are most welcome. My controllers' lifespan welcomes them too.
Furthermore, since I don't want depressing developments in the story, I absolutely love otome games where people just flirt peacefully.
Some have pretty harsh scenarios.
I made it a habit to check reviews and avoid those games.
I did buy one game that was like a blood-soaked party full of yanderes, knowing what I was getting into, but I still couldn't clear it.
I'll allow imprisonment. But why does *everyone* come to kill me in the bad ends!? That's not a bad end, it's a dead end! Well, if you have to call it good or bad, I guess it's bad! Or rather, it's the worst!
What's 'Happy' about cutting someone's Achilles tendons and chaining them up!? The only one who's happy is the yandere guy! Or rather, isn't this less 'Yan-de-re' and more just 'Mentally ill'!? Ah, so this is that 'Menhera' thing I heard about.... I don't get it...
...The world of yanderes was too difficult for me...
I felt like I had peered into the abyss, and the abyss had peered back into me...
It's fine.
I don't need 'depth' that makes me peer into the abyss in my game scenarios.
I'm happy just splashing around in the shallows.
I don't need the anguishing of real-life romance.
The game that was a perfect fit for me, with my belief in the supremacy of shallow waters, was an otome game called 'Fantasy Flower Garden'.
Beautiful stills, pleasant BGM, a super tacky opening and ending, cheap production values, a paper-thin, template scenario with no depth or troubles... it was a game that fit my needs 120%.
I'm praising it. I commend it from the bottom of my heart.
「I understand from the bottom of my heart! In fact, that's the *only* thing I understand!!」
Lady Luciana, clenching her fist, strongly agrees with me.
She is the princess of a country called the Ametis Kingdom, far from this one.
And she is a fellow reincarnator.
And 'the only thing I understand'... I haven't heard that in ages. It's nostalgic and makes me happy.... Elizabeth-sama doesn't use that kind of language, after all.
「I'm also in the 'Long Live Templates, No Depressing Developments' camp, so I *really* loved that game!」
「We're comrades, then.」
When I said this with a laugh, Lady Luciana also nodded with a happy smile, saying, 「Yes!」
Lady Luciana, who had come on a pilgrimage to the 'holy land', seemed to want to talk about our previous lives, so I invited her to my house.
At the castle, there are many maids and knight guards, so we can't really talk openly.
My house is in an American countryside style (or so I arbitrarily think), but thanks to My Darling Paul-kun demonstrating his tremendous competence, it's been transformed into a perfectly normal 'noble-style residence'.
It's fine, really, but it's my own home and yet I feel a little unsettled.... It's fine, though.
It's just that the petty commoner inside my heart is screaming, "You mustn't get used to this!"
I actually invited Elizabeth-sama too, but she apologetically said, 「Otome games are outside my area of expertise...」.
And conversely, the games Elizabeth-sama played were outside *our* area of expertise.
I mean, I hadn't even heard of most of the titles she mentioned... She was really surprised, saying, 「You don't know it!?」, but were they that famous...? I'd never even heard of them...
But...
「To think I'd find a fellow enthusiast, whom I never found even one of back in Japan, here in another world...」
「I feel exactly the same.」
Lady Luciana nods deeply.
To think I could have a fan meet-up for that game here in another world... ♪ Nanananana~, Nanananana~, A meet-up in another world.
After taking a sip of tea, Lady Luciana leaned forward slightly towards me.
「Marie-san, you've seen the romanceable characters up close, haven't you!?」
「Well, only some of them.」
I still haven't met the Four-Eyes Glasses or the Muscle-brain.... Not that I particularly want to, though.
Also, I haven't met Elrick-sama, but judging from what Elizabeth-sama and her maid said the other day, I get the feeling 'it's better for everyone if I *don't* meet him'. I could see the appearance I wanted to see in his portrait.... Though that portrait was a bit, well...
Fortunately, or perhaps I should say, since the Macnagan Ducal house is one that never appears at social gatherings, I won't meet Elrick-sama even if I attend parties or soirées.
「It's already been seven years since the game's timeline, but what were they like seven years ago!?」
「Let me see...」
Seven years ago.
That was when I was still a student. And when I was practically coughing up blood over the massive amount of assignments.... Elizabeth-sama and Emilia, being honor students, seemed to be enjoying themselves every day.... I mean, why are both of them so capable? Well, Elizabeth-sama is a reincarnator, so she probably has cheat-like knowledge from her previous life. But what about Emilia, a pure commoner...?
As for the state of the romanceable characters seven years ago...
「I'd say they weren't much different from now.」
...is about all I can say.
As expected, Lady Luciana made a dissatisfied face and said, 「Ehh~!」
But that's just how it is, so it can't be helped.
「But, I thought this even when I was playing the game...」
I take a sip of tea.... It's gotten pretty cold. I don't really mind personally since I can drink it even when cold. But maybe I should make a fresh pot?
「Lady Luciana, shall I make more tea?」
I try checking. In response, Lady Luciana laughs and says, 「No, I'm a cat-tongue, so this is fine.」
How kind... ♡
「Since I am in the position of 'Princess', I usually refrain from saying such things... But I believe Marie-san, as a fellow countrywoman, would understand...」
After that preface, Lady Luciana looked at me and smiled wryly.
「I always think... things like tea are fine to drink even when cold, and it's wasteful to exchange it every time...」
「That's the *only* thing I understand!!」
I ended up saying it. Lady Luciana also nodded deeply.
In this world, even if nobles demonstrate a 'spirit of not being wasteful', they get called 'cheap' or whatnot.
Appearances and dignity are sometimes as important as life itself.
For royalty like Lady Luciana, that must be even heavier.
I've digressed.
...But still, conversations with fellow Japanese people are so easy and nice.
「Well, let's get back on topic. I also thought this when playing the game. The protagonist heroine is the daughter of a Count, right?」
「Yes, that's right.」
「And almost all the romanceable characters are of higher status than the protagonist, right?」
「Well, isn't that how it is in most otome games?」
「Well, yes.」
The romanceable characters in 'Fantasy Flower Garden' range from the Crown Prince at the top to a knight apprentice at the bottom. Even that Muscle-brain knight apprentice has a father who holds a Knight's title, a quasi-noble. He's not a complete commoner.
The power hierarchy of the game's characters looks something like this:
Crown Prince > Robert Aristoll Duke > Elrick Macnagan (Duke's Heir) > Hendrick Orchard (Marquis's Heir) > Four-Eyes Glasses (Marquis's Heir) > Alphonse Norman (Knight) > Muscle-brain Knight Apprentice.
If we add the heroine to this, she'd be between Alphonse-sama and the Muscle-brain.
Meaning the heroine's rank is second from the bottom.
The difference in status between her and the Crown Prince at the top is like heaven and earth.
「The heroine's status is practically at the bottom among the characters, yet she casually talks to the Crown Prince... isn't that insanely bold of her...?」
「I certainly thought that too, but I believe that's a point where we must deliberately turn a blind eye...」
You thought so too, right!
「And then, you see... If I think that even while just playing the game, the idea of actually speaking to the romanceable characters in reality is so impossible it's laughable...」
「Ah... Now that you mention it, that's true...」
Yes.
Even just playing the game, I thought, "The otome game heroine's 'deliberate lack of reading the air' is amazing!". How could someone who thinks that while playing possibly go and speak to the real-life versions of them?
「I was also actually attending school during the game's period... The only ones I could meet regularly were the Crown Prince and Alphonse-sama.... And well, speaking to those two was pretty much impossible.」
「But with Marie-san's 'Heroine Power'!?」
Lady Luciana clenched her fist and said that, but...
「I have no such power...」
How could anyone casually make physical contact with that!? It's too scary to even consider!! I mean, even Elizabeth-sama doesn't casually touch!!
And also.
「The prince in the game was an 'Ore-sama Prince', wasn't he?」
「Yes.... The actual prince gives a very gentle impression, and is dazzling enough to blind you.」
...The reason the prince is 'gentle' is because you are Lady Elizabeth's friend...
If that weren't the case, the prince surely wouldn't give you the time of day...
But it's true that his impression is quite different from the ' Prince Leonard' in the game.
That was probably just the 'Ore-sama' attribute assigned as 'game character trait'. ♪ Nanananana, Nanananana, Ore-sama Prince.
「I'm... not really a fan of 'Ore-sama characters'...」
「Oh, is that so?」
「Yes. Do you like them, Lady Luciana?」
「In 2D, like games and manga, I'd say I lean towards liking them.」
Oho... So you are a fan.
「If you're not good with the 'Ore-sama type', then doesn't that mean the actual prince is easier to approach, in a sense...?」
「Lady Luciana.」
I click my tongue *chichi-chichi...* and wag my index finger.
「Did the Crown Prince give off an atmosphere where one could casually start a conversation with him?」
When I said that, Lady Luciana let out a small 「Aah...」 and then nodded once.
「Violently, IMPOSSIBLE.」
You said it.
「Anyway, he has this intense 'aura of pure royalty', right? It's just... too awe-inspiring, and talking to him without a proper reason is an impossible game in itself!」
「I understand.」
Lady Luciana nodded deeply, then sighed and gave a wry smile.
「This country is a major power compared to my Ametis Kingdom, right? Just the fact that he's the Crown Prince of such a major power is enough to make me feel intimidated, but on top of that, his demeanor is flawless... It makes me realize, 'So this is the dignity of royalty from a major power'...」
「But Lady Luciana, you are royalty too...」
「Marie-san.」
Suddenly called in a quiet voice, I inadvertently replied 「Yes」 and straightened my posture.
Lady Luciana's eyes look a bit fixed... It's kinda scary...
「In all things, there is such a thing as a 'difference in class'.」
「Y-yes, I suppose...?」
「Yes. My older brother is the Crown Prince of our country, but seeing Prince Leonard made me truly think. My brother, who is called 'one of the most handsome men in our country' and gets a bit full of himself, compared to Prince Leonard, is like the difference between a 'Hollywood actor' and 'the most popular boy in class'. The difference between someone who could be the main lead in an otome game and someone who's just 'kinda good-looking' around you is like that between clouds and mud.」
Lady Luciana, stating this decisively with fixed eyes, is a bit scary...
「Th-that much of a difference...」
「Yes.」
Decisively.
...I wonder what Lady Luciana's brother is like... Now I'm getting curious, inversely.
I'll ask Paul-kun later to procure a portrait of the Ametis Crown Prince for me.
While I was thinking that, Lady Luciana, still with fixed eyes, stated decisively again.
「Between Prince Leonard and my brother, while they hold the same position of Crown Prince of their respective countries, the difference is like that between Ichi*ro and Nii*ro!」
That's hard to understand!!
Lady Luciana, you look like you're thinking 'I've made a perfect analogy', but it's shockingly hard to understand!!
But it makes me even more curious about Lady Luciana's brother!!
Nii*ro-san is funny and a good guy, isn't he!?
I absolutely must confirm what the Ametis Crown Prince looks like...!
Lady Luciana drank her tea as if to calm her feelings, and let out her breath as if taking a small, deep breath.
Her appearance is that of a lovely princess, and her manner is elegant and composed, but her inner self is still 'a former ordinary Japanese person'...
Why Ichi*ro and Nii*ro...
「Both you, Marie-san, and Elizabeth-sama say, 'This world is not inside an otome game'.... Elizabeth-sama's explanation was also reasonable...」
Lady Luciana lowered her eyes thoughtfully, paused briefly, and then raised her gaze as if she had sorted out her thoughts.
「Is there no possibility... that this is a 'world of a modified otome game'?」
「That is to say...」
Like you often see in novels, a scenario where it's certain that this is the 'world of a game' or 'world of a manga', and the reincarnator struggles to prevent it from following the 'original story'... something like that?
「Yes. The possibility that this is a world that has deviated from the 'original work' due to the actions of Marie-san and Elizabeth-sama, who possess memories of their previous lives...」
「I believe it's almost 'nonexistent'.」
This is the result of Elizabeth-sama and I spending a considerable amount of time verifying each possibility one by one.
「If the 'differences' between the game and this world were brought about by me or Elizabeth-sama, then those 'differences' could only exist within the scope of our involvement, right?」
「Well, yes.」
Right.
In cases like 'struggling to deal with the doom flags' or 'struggling to avoid the condemnation ending', it's natural that 'the influence spreads from around the person struggling'.
Things change starting from within reach, and eventually the story itself deviates from the original.
Then, what about places you can't reach no matter how you struggle?
Considering the premise, 'they cannot change' is the correct answer.
「Before the game's start, I had contact with zero romanceable characters. Meaning, I had no opportunity to alter the game world's characters.」
And I had no intention of doing so anyway.
...I mean, if I can avoid meeting Four-Eyes Glasses or the Muscle-brain, I'd rather not, right...?
「What about Elizabeth-sama?」
Lady Luciana leaned forward slightly towards me.
I get it. Things like this, that feel like 'events from inside manga or novels', are exciting, aren't they~?
「Elizabeth-sama got engaged to the Crown Prince when he was nine, just like in the game. According to Elizabeth-sama, 'Even back then, Leon-sama was already Leon-sama'.」
She says there wasn't a hint of 'Ore-sama' about him.
「Also, regarding Elizabeth-sama's brother, according to her, 'Him attending Cockford is, no matter how you think about it, impossible'.」
First of all, the 'Macnagan Ducal House' is a heterodoxy among heterodoxies even within this country's nobility.
They do no socializing or official attendance at court, and apparently, it's originally rare for them to even be at their residence in the royal capital.
In fact, the members of the Macnagan Ducal house saw Elizabeth-sama off after her marriage and then withdrew to their territory.
I hear they come to the royal capital on occasion, but for them, the royal capital is apparently 'a place you go when you have business'.
So, even if a person like me didn't exist, the idea of her brother attending a school in the royal capital... is very hard to imagine.
I asked my father what he would do if my brother said he wanted to attend a school in the royal capital. His response was, with a straight face, 「If he says he wants to go, he can do as he likes, but... would he even want to in the first place?」
「It's Cockford, right? A glorified circus where a motley crew of nobles repeatedly engage in smiling-faced probing of each other's intentions and pecking-order battles, all under a noble appearance. Unless he had some serious business there, I doubt he'd even want to set foot in such a place.」 Or so he says. I agree with my father's opinion.
「'A glorified circus with a noble appearance'... The Macnagan Duke is quite a sharp-tongued person, isn't he...?」
When I relayed Elizabeth-sama's words, Lady Luciana breathed out a 'Hoh' and murmured that.
But you see, Lady Luciana. I've met the Duke a few times, and my only impression is of a cheerful, pleasant, handsome middle-aged man...
He doesn't seem like someone who would say such scathing things...
The Macnagan Ducal house is kinda scary... is what I thought.
As a side note, according to Paul-kun, they are famous among major merchants as 'the house you must never underestimate in this country'.
And they are also famous in the underworld as 'the house you must absolutely never get involved with'.
...Great nobles are frightening after all! But when I said that, Paul-kun laughed. 「It's fine. There's only about one that scary, the Macnagan Ducal house! Ah, and these days, you can add the Aristoll Ducal house to that too!」 Or so he said.
...Indeed, the Aristoll Ducal house is scary. That super-elite Duke and Duchess are frightening beyond belief.
Putting that aside.
During the game's period seven years ago, Elrick-sama was apparently in the territory. His parents were in the royal capital, but that was apparently because Elizabeth-sama had become the Crown Prince's fiancée; if not, they would have had no business in the royal capital, or so Elizabeth-sama said.
In other words.
If things had gone according to the game and Elizabeth-sama had stepped down as the Crown Prince's fiancée, all members of the Macnagan Ducal house would not have been in the royal capital to begin with.
「I see...」
Lady Luciana nodded once, as if convinced of something.
「So, you're saying that differences arise precisely *if* things had gone according to the game...」
「Yes.」
And regarding those 'differences', Elizabeth-sama had no involvement whatsoever.
The Macnagan Duke himself is said to have stated, 'If there's no business in the royal capital, there's no need to be in the royal capital.'
「As for other 'differences', do you remember the Crown Prince's nickname in the game, Lady Luciana?」
When I asked, Lady Luciana nodded immediately.
「It was 'Leo-sama', right?」
「Yes.」
Crown Prince's esteemed name is 'Leonard'. It wouldn't be strange for his nickname to be 'Leo'.
But however.
「In reality, he is called 'Leon' by his family and such.」
Elizabeth-sama also calls him 'Leon-sama'.
In the game, the heroine calls the Crown Prince by his nickname after they've gotten somewhat close, because the Crown Prince tells her to 'call me that'.
The heroine, upon being asked, agrees instantly, saying, 「Understood, Leo-sama.」
I mean, shouldn't she hesitate a little!? The other party is someone from high above the clouds, way up near the stratosphere!
The real Elizabeth-sama said with a wry smile, 「Since I had been calling him Prince Leonard until then, it took me a little while to get used to it.」
As for the real Crown Prince's nickname 'Leon', Elizabeth-sama said he also told her 'call me that', just like in the game.
But that nickname wasn't something prepared just for Elizabeth-sama.
Crown Prince's parents, Their Majesties, and his cousin Hendrick-sama also call him that.
In other words, regarding the nickname which is a point of difference from the game, it was already different from the game *before* Elizabeth-sama even met him.
If you consider whether the 'Leo' nickname in the game was prepared solely for the heroine, that's not the case either.
In the game, he himself says that 'those close to me call me that'.
And indeed, Robert-sama and Alphonse-sama who appear in the game call The prince, 'Leo-sama'.
「The idea of Robert-sama or Alphonse-sama calling the Crown Prince by a nickname... feels extremely unnatural when you look at the real them.」
Robert-sama is a 'Duke', a rank bestowed upon him by the Royal Family, a servant of the Royal House.
That super-elite Duke-sama never lets his guard down. It's scary.
So there's no way he would ever call the Crown Prince by a nickname... or anything like that. It's scary.
And Elizabeth-sama was not involved in the process of him becoming that iron-walled super-elite. Or rather, she couldn't be.
The one who educated him to be that way was apparently his mother, the former Duchess. Elizabeth-sama said, 「I've met her a few times. I've never had a conversation with her.」
She apparently interacts with Robert-sama's younger brother, Eduardo-sama, now too, and Eduardo-sama also seems to be afraid of his super-elite brother, saying 「My brother has always been 'like that'...」. It's scary. Also, I feel like I might get along with Eduardo-sama personally.
And as for Alphonse-sama, while he is now the head of Elizabeth-sama's exclusive guard knights, he was originally the Crown Prince's exclusive guard.
The people who are 'Exclusive Guard Knights' are super-elites among the chosen knights.
Not just Alphonse-sama, but the other guard knights also regard the Crown Prince not just as their 'guard target', but as their 'one and absolute master'.
Such people would not lightly call their master by a nickname.
Even before that, they don't engage in idle chatter voluntarily while on duty. Apparently, someone who would engage in idle chatter while on duty couldn't become a 'Guard Knight' in the first place.
A 'Guard Knight' is not just a 'knight who simply always stands by the guard target's side' as depicted in the game.
They are hyper-elite knights who have firmly resolved to 'protect their master from all dangers, no matter what', and possess skills beyond those of regular knights.
Such a person, no matter how much it's for the sake of a beloved heroine, would not simply quit being a knight.
Even before that, someone who would waver in their convictions or position could never become a Guard Knight. It's that difficult a post.
「Haa... So there are various points that are different, aren't there...」
Lady Luciana let out a sigh, seeming impressed by my story.
Well, to be honest, more than half of it is based on things Elizabeth-sama researched and considered...
...But it can't be helped! A little girl from a newly-risen Count family doesn't get to meet such people on a daily basis! Even before 'differences between the game and reality', I hardly know 'the reality of them'!
And the biggest 'difference between the game and reality' is Cockford Academy, the setting of the game.
The gate structure seen from the outside street and the scenery beyond it are almost the same. But the inside was too different.
I mean—it was so sparkly—...
Maybe I feel that especially because Steinford was a place with no unnecessary decorations, very much a "Well, you guys came here to study, right?" kind of place.
That was enough to make your head go 'bang'... I mean, it's too sparkly, I can't keep up...
As a side note, Steinford School's hallways do have decorations. They do, but one out of every three is a forgery. If you want to know the correct answers, you can ask any of the lecturers. Or rather, if you declare, "This one and this one are forgeries," they will only tell you if you're right or wrong. At that time, you'll be asked why you thought they were forgeries, so guessing is not allowed.
...What in the world is that school...? Well, it was kinda interesting, though.
The Headmaster explained the curriculum, and apparently noble daughters have classes like 'Tea Ceremony'! Ugh, you've got to be kidding!
And it was for real, 'Dancing Class'.
What about 'Statistics'? 'Legal Studies'? 'Stodel Language' (like Latin in my previous world, a mysterious language seemingly only used in academics)? 'Foreign Language' and 'Second Foreign Language'?
Ah, the 'General Education' at Steinford is all considered 'Specialized Subjects' over here... I-I see...
Elizabeth-sama said, 「The 'raison d'être' of each school is different, so I suppose it's just like this?」 but...
I felt anew that Steinford's curriculum is devilish, and at the same time thought, "But seriously, what's the point of attending Cockford?"
If Steinford's 'General Education' is considered 'Specialized Courses' over there, then the Crown Prince and the other romanceable characters have absolutely no reason to attend.
Because if they are at that level, they would have mastered even those 'specialized courses' through home tutoring.
In fact, Elizabeth-sama and the Crown Prince had already studied over 80% of the general education lectures.... High-ranking nobles are scary!!
That curriculum at Cockford has been that way since long before we were born.
And that school building has been there since before we were born.
「If this were the 'world of the game', then at the very least, Cockford's school building should be as it is in the game. It hasn't been renovated or anything, so it's been the same building as it is now since before we were born into this world.」
「Certainly, that point is a 'place that cannot be changed no matter how one struggles'.」
Yes, that's it.
And in that very 'place that cannot be changed no matter how one struggles', the game's events are supposed to happen.
That means, 'reproducing the game's storyline is impossible in this world'.
「...Somehow, it feels like I'm telling you a disappointing story, I'm sorry.」
Even though you came all this way on a pilgrimage to the holy land...
When I bowed my head, Lady Luciana smiled at me brightly.
「Oh, no, no! It's nothing for which Marie-san should apologize!」
Lady Luciana laughed a little cheerfully, 「Ufufu.」
「It's true, I was a little disappointed that this world isn't 'the game itself'. But more than that, I'm happier and find it more precious that I was able to meet wonderful comrades like you, Marie-san, and Elizabeth-sama.」
Lu, Lady Luciana... ♡
「Marie-san, what other games did you play besides 'Fantasy Flower Garden'?」
To Lady Luciana, who asked me this with a smile, I listed one title after another of games I played in the past.
To which Lady Luciana responded with things like, 「I played that one too!」 or 「Haven't you played this one, Marie-san?」
*I'm* the one who met wonderful comrades, aren't I?
I was happy, and enjoyed myself.
That day, we excitedly talked to our hearts' content about the games, manga, and novels we loved, right up until the last possible moment.
