Episode 7: I've Become a Witch ①

I was reincarnated into another world and became a witch so I want to live a slow life but the Demon King won't let me go.

[I've Become a Witch ① ]

Translated by: ME

First, I'll check my belongings. Since I really came out on a whim with just the clothes on my back, even I don't know what's in my bag. Aside from the ring I swiped from Tim's, there's still a bit of half-eaten cookie, paper and pen, a sharp knife I used for odd jobs, and a small jewel.

"A jewel?"

I wondered what jewel it could be, so I took it out and looked closely. It was the jewel used in the pendant that the Demon Lord sent to Mira. It was too small to be of any use, so Mira rejected it, and I remembered stuffing it in my bag when she said I could have it.

I had completely forgotten about the Demon Lord until just now, but remembering him makes me feel sick. I should use this jewel quickly and turn it into money or something. Yes, let's do that.

"There's nothing decent here."

The items I received from Merita's shop earlier seem more useful for living from now on.

"Anyway, the top priority is a house, right? Let's quickly use magic here."

When I checked the cottage, the inside wasn't as damaged as the exterior suggested. Immediately inside was a kitchen/living room, and beyond that were two small rooms. Thankfully, there's a stove and a fireplace. With a little work, it would be more than enough to live in.

"Now then."

I ate all the remaining cookies and could feel my hunger being satisfied. I looked around again to make sure no one was around. If I used magic as freely as I did when I was a demon, I would run out quickly, so I carefully adjusted and moved my magic power.

First, I'll fix the exterior of the cottage. I used wind and water magic to remove dirt and regenerate the decayed parts. I cleaned the interior in the same way, removing the old and decayed furniture to make it neat. I processed soil and stone to repair the damaged stove and fireplace. I also tidied up the surrounding plants a little, so that it wouldn't look like a ruin even if someone visited.

"Phew."

I'm really tired. Detailed work like regenerating and moving things drains my energy more than my magic power. I may have overdone it, even though it hasn't even been a day since I came here.

"Let's go to sleep quickly today."

I immediately entered the newly completed cottage. It's clean, but the inside is simple. But it's more than enough to rest. There's no bed, so I spread out the cloth I bought earlier on the floor and lay down. It's hard, but I can sleep. When I used magic to light the fireplace, the room became warmer.

"Ah, I'm tired."

The moment I lay down, sleepiness rushed over me. This is the first time I've been this sleepy since I was reborn. I fell into the world of dreams as if dropping.

I woke up, noticing the light coming in through the window. My body is stiff because I slept on the floor. There are many things to do, but I decided to remember to make a bed. I got up, stretched, and went outside.

"Yeah, it's a nice day."

First, I need water for living. I can't wash my face or cook without water. Thankfully, there's a stream nearby. I'm hungry, but not yet to the point of collapsing, so I used earth magic to create two large water jars and lined them up in the kitchen. I made several buckets using the wood from the old furniture I removed from the cottage last night, and made several trips to fill the water jars. I secretly cast a spell on the water jars to keep the water clean and prevent it from rotting, so I'm relieved.

Next is food. I put small pieces of wood that didn't seem to have any other use into the stove and transferred the embers from the fireplace to burn them. There was an old, small, holed copper pot that the previous resident had left behind, so I also cast a restoration spell on it. I drew water from the water jar and filled the pot.

"Now then, let's procure some food before the water boils."

I left the house and looked around. I had an idea last night, but there are edible wild plants and mushrooms growing there. Since I'm a demon, I probably won't die even if there's poison, but I want to eat something delicious if possible, so I used appraisal magic to pick only things that I could definitely eat.

I returned to the kitchen, washed them well, cut them into bite-sized pieces with a knife, and threw them into the simmering pot. Since they were natural things, they had a lot of scum, and white foam came out, so I repeated the tedious task of scooping it up with a spoon made of wood and throwing it away. When the whole thing was cooked through and the broth had settled into a nice color, I added a pinch of salt that I had obtained yesterday.

"Yeah, it's delicious."

Isn't this pretty good? I took the soup into a dish that I had made with the spoon. Then I suddenly realized that there was no place to sit and eat.

"Oops."

I need a bed, but I also have to make a table and chairs. But I'm getting hungry and don't think I can use magic soon. It's bad manners, but I sat in the center of the room and started eating the soup. It's a simple taste, but the warmth spreads through my body. I can probably survive on this for a while.

"Phew, I'm full."

Now that I'm full, I can feel my magic power returning.

"Okay, let's start improving the living environment!!"

Then, I spent two days successfully transforming the cottage into a comfortable home. In addition to a small table and chairs, there's a rocking chair where I can relax and sit. No one is coming, but I made four sets of dishes each, and the pots and utensils I use in the kitchen are perfect. The bedroom has a bed and a closet. I thought about making the other room a work room, but I didn't want it to get stuffy, so I made a small work room outside the cottage separately. I even installed a large kiln there, so I feel like I might have overdone it a bit. I made a field in the garden so that I could cultivate crops. Now my witch life preparations are perfect.

Next, I need materials. I realized on the way out that there are many things in this forest. Perhaps it's because there are places connected to the world where demons live that the plants grow quickly. Since there are no people and it's not disturbed, I can take as much as I want. The brown, large fruits could be peeled, pounded, and squeezed to extract high-quality oil similar to olive oil. The leftover pulp could be scattered in the field and used as fertilizer. When the long, gourd-like fruits were squeezed, water came out, and only sparse fibers remained. I found a medicinal herb with disinfectant and sedative properties and its flowers, so I'll pull them out with their roots and plant them in the field. Fortunately, I was also able to find an already empty beehive. There was no honey left, but this nest material alone is a treasure. I collected the materials with a cheerful feeling and returned to the workshop.

"Alright, let's make it."

I'll use the knowledge I cultivated in my previous life. The method is based on what I've seen, and the materials aren't correct, so I don't think I'll definitely succeed, but I'll rely on magic when I'm in trouble. I decided to try adjusting while pouring magic power into the materials.

First, I'll start with the soap. It's not that animal oil soap is bad, but the smell is unique. I burned the sparse fiber parts of the gourd-like fruit into ash and mixed it with oil. When it emulsified, I poured it into a wooden frame and dried it in a cool place. I really wanted to age it over time, but I wanted to check the results quickly, so I used magic to speed up the drying and aging process. I was able to make a soap with better lather and a gentle, pleasant scent than animal soap. This could be useful enough as a product.

Next, I put the empty beehive in a pot and crushed and melted it. I filtered the melted liquid with a cloth to make beeswax. I mixed the beeswax with a little oil and the essence produced by steaming the medicinal herbs. This is how to make an ointment that is effective for wounds and pain. I compared it to the wound medicine I got yesterday, but my medicine is much better made. Isn't this pretty good as a witch's medicine? I filled it into small earthenware bottles that I had made and covered them with cloth.

Next is lotion. This is just a bonus, but I refined the juice from the fruits that turn into fiber and removed impurities. I mixed in the essence of the fragrant flowers that I distilled to create an easy-to-make lotion. I want to put this in a bottle, but it's too much trouble to refine glass, so I'll put it in a smaller bottle for now.

"Making this much should be enough for now."

When I realized it, the sun had completely set. I didn't use that much magic power, but I'm really tired.

"I'll sleep today, and the delivery, or rather, the business negotiation, will be tomorrow."

I hurried back to bed and fell asleep without even eating.
