Episode 2: [Getting a Job at the Demon King's Castle]

I was reincarnated into another world and became a witch so I want to live a slow life but the Demon King won't let me go.

[Getting a Job at the Demon King's Castle]

Translated by: ME

The life with Hiiragi was stimulating and interesting. It seemed she mainly bought and sold magical tools called magic items, and again, mysterious customers would buy strange things or come to sell them.

A gentleman with the face of a lion bought a doll that roared when a frog approached it, and so on; the demons were full of mysteries.

A regular, Doctor Yagi, brought me an interesting story.

"Apparently, they're looking for a general worker to work at the Demon King's castle. The work at the Demon King's castle is dull and troublesome, so in this world where everyone only wants to do what they like, no one stays long."

I was intrigued.

I wanted to know what the existence of the Demon King was like in this world, and I actually liked dull and troublesome work.

At Hiiragi's shop, I helped with accounting, inventory management, cleaning, and customer service with all my might. Hiiragi would even say, "You don't have to be so proper."

Thanks to that, I learned to read and write the letters and numbers of this world, and I also learned some of the rules. I was originally a diligent person.

I have a nature that wants to do things properly. According to Hiiragi, sales have doubled since I started helping, work is progressing, and customers have increased. But apparently, it's become busy and troublesome.

"I want to work at the Demon King's castle."

Hiiragi and Doctor Yagi were surprised by my statement and tried to stop me, saying, "You shouldn't," but I smiled and said, "Isn't doing what you want what demons do?" and went to the Demon King's castle.

The Demon King's castle was large and old, and there were a lot of demons.

First, I talked to the gatekeeper to find out what I needed to do to get hired, and the gatekeeper rang something like a bell twice.

"The person in charge will come; talk to them."

As I stood there blankly waiting, a red-haired, handsome young man with sharp eyes came. Demons are mostly beautiful, but I had never seen such a beautiful person in town.

The beautiful young man looked me up and down, surprised that I was frozen in place by his perfect beauty, and frowned slightly.

"What can you do?"

"I can clean, do laundry, cook, write, and calculate. I think I can do most things if you tell me to, but I don't like getting dirty or anything bloody."

"Is that so?"

Perhaps surprised that I could answer immediately, he narrowed his eyes and smiled as if he found it interesting, then simply told me to follow him and went into the castle.

As I was wondering whether I should follow him, the gatekeeper who had rung the bell gestured with his chin as if to say, "Hurry up," so I hurriedly chased after him.

"Hey, I brought you the general worker you wanted. Use them as much as you want."

The red-haired man opened a large door and shouted at a mountain of documents.

Then the mountain moved, and a blue-haired, handsome young man with glasses appeared from inside. What, are there only handsome men here? My eyes are getting dazzled.

"Almus, don't just randomly choose someone to help me."

"You should be grateful that someone even wants the job, Tims."

The red-haired man is Almus, and the blue-haired man is apparently Tims. I see, I see. I should remember them because I'll probably be involved with them a lot in the future.

"I'm Miya, and I'll be in your care from today. I look forward to working with you."

When I greeted them in a loud and clear voice and gave a demon-style bow, Tims, who had been looking at me with a bored expression, widened his eyes in surprise.

"Heeh."

Almus was grinning next to me, wondering what was so interesting.

"She can read, write, and calculate. Just try using her for now. If she's no good, you can have her work as a maid."

"Understood. She seems interesting, so I'll hire her."

Apparently, the hiring exam was over without me even knowing it. Almus patted me on the head once and then quickly went somewhere.

"Well then, Miya, was it? From today, you'll be working under me. It's going to be incredibly dull and troublesome, so good luck."

"Yes!"

The first job Tims gave me was mainly organizing documents.

I thought this would be a free and selfish world, but apparently, there are various things going on even among the demons, such as cracking down on territories, maintaining public facilities such as roads, and monitoring the borders with the human world. Various demons seem to be working on these things.

I was nostalgic, thinking that this was no different from the government work I had in my previous life.

The big difference is that if someone says something unreasonable or acts badly, the Demon King will suddenly appear and punish them. Everyone seems to be afraid of the existence of the Demon King, and apparently, most things can be resolved by sending a letter saying, "If you're too unreasonable, we'll have the Demon King deal with you directly." The Demon King is too convenient.

I classify all kinds of documents that arrive at Tims' office every day by subject, then prioritize and rearrange them.

Demons don't think ahead, so apparently, they send documents as soon as they think of something, and when I check, there are multiple copies of the same content, or content that says, "The previous matter is cancelled," making it extremely confusing.

I quickly sort them and mercilessly dispose of unnecessary ones.

In just a few days, the mountain of documents that had been piled up at first has now been reduced to a few centimeters on the desk.

In addition, I cleaned up the messy room, organized the bookshelf, and even had time to serve Tims tea.

"Amazing."

Tims was drinking tea with sparkling eyes, looking genuinely impressed. When I first met him, he had a tired and worn-out atmosphere, but perhaps because I took care of the miscellaneous tasks and he had more time, his handsome appearance has been polished and he seems to be shining even more.

"Since Miya came, my work has been too smooth and I'm actually bored. I was so busy before."

"I'm glad you're pleased."

"Also, this 'sweet' thing is really good!"

"It's nothing special in my hometown."

Apparently, demons don't really have the concept of sweets. That's probably because demons don't need to eat.

I don't get hungry either, but I found flour and sugar that were said to have been brought from a place where humans live at the market, and I bought them on impulse out of nostalgia.

I started asking merchants who trade with humans for various things and started making sweets.

I couldn't handle it all alone, so when I was at the shop, I would treat Hiiragi and Yagi. They both liked it, so I started serving it to Tims as a snack with tea.

Today it's cookies. Perhaps because it's too much trouble to remember the names, everything I make is called "sweet."

"Yo. What's the sweet today?"

"Almus, you're here again."

Tims looked annoyed. Almus didn't seem to care and quickly entered the room and sat down on the sofa.

I quickly served Almus tea and cookies as well.

"Today it's this round thing. Let's see. Yeah, it's sweet and delicious."

"You say that no matter what you eat."

"It's true, so it's fine."

Ignoring their trivial exchange, I quickly started sorting the newly arrived documents.

"Miya is really hardworking. Don't you get bored?"

"No. I enjoy having work to do."

"You're weird."

Demons apparently don't have the concept of diligence. They have a hedonistic view of life where they only do what they want.

"But Tims and Almus are working, aren't they?"

"Well, that's because the Demon King wants us to."

"That's right, because the Demon King wants us to."

Tims and Almus seemed to take it for granted.

The Demon King seems to be the absolute and most important existence for them.

"Hey, Miya. Why don't you work under me next? Tims' place is so organized now, so it's fine, right?"

"What? Are you telling me to get busy again?"

Tims glared at Almus.

"Okay."

When I easily agreed, Almus's face lit up with joy, and Tims made a desperate face.

"I'll organize the documents here in the morning, take a tea break at noon, and then help Almus with his work in the afternoon. Is that okay?"

To be honest, Tims' work has become so efficient that I have a lot of free time.

"Then it's decided!!"

"As long as the tea doesn't run out, it's fine."

Both of them seemed satisfied and went back to their tea time.
