Episode 11: [Sometimes you just need to beat your opponent, witch-style]

I was reincarnated into another world and became a witch so I want to live a slow life but the Demon King won't let me go.

[Sometimes you just need to beat your opponent, witch-style]

Translated by: ME

Dian had been staying in the village for several months. At first, he was avoided by those around him because of his background as a former knight from the Empire (the city), but as expected of someone blessed by the gods. His dazzling, divine aura, fearless personality, and gentle, kind demeanor were well-received, and for some reason, he's now popular.

He doesn't refuse any job, and he seems to be teaching the children letters and math, so I've seen him being called "Teacher." He also started sharing some of the work that Yuri had been doing, and when Dian and Yuri are doing something together, the village girls get all flustered and come to peek. I was worried that the young men might be jealous because of that, but Dian, being from the city, is admired and adored, and Yuri, who was originally an orphan and is my disciple, seems to be cherished like a younger brother, so there haven't been any conflicts to worry about. How peaceful.

My work is also going well, and with the funds I've saved, I've been able to go in and out of the city, and I've set up a branch of Rodan's shop in the city. I've also met a reliable merchant, and I'm entrusting the branch to them and leaving them in charge of negotiations with various regions. I freely make products in the forest and earn a moderate income, living a leisurely life. I'm not too busy, and the life of interacting with the villagers and teaching my cute disciple is very peaceful and enjoyable. I'm filled with satisfaction that I never got when I was working as a secretary, rushing around like a human.

However, life doesn't always go as planned? Or maybe it's demon life.

"Witch, pursuers from the church are coming."

Dian, who suddenly visited me at dawn, told me with a serious expression that I had never seen before.

"Eh, now?"

"It seems they were waiting for the commotion of my desertion to die down."

I could smell a faint scent of blood from Dian. Even though he said he quit, he's a knight, so he must be used to rough stuff.

"...Are the villagers harmed?"

"They were only targeting me, so there's been nothing so far. But I don't know about the future."

Dian's usually gentle, smiling expression twisted slightly. He doesn't want to involve the people around him. I had vaguely believed that this life would continue without pursuers coming.

"It seems like this time was just a reconnaissance, so there were only a few of them. But they were skilled enough that it would have been a bonus if they could have taken me down. I don't think they'll let it go."

I just wanted to live freely and carefree. I'm calling myself a witch and trying to quit being a demon, but I'm not human myself. I don't have any demonic energy, so my power is weakened, but my lifespan and durability are different. I thought I could just run away if something happened, but I've gotten too involved.

"...Dian, what do you think I should do?"

I think it's a sneaky question. I think Dian realizes that I'm not human. There may be just normal people who call themselves witches, but I'm different. I'm the real deal, using magic different from that of people born as demons. There's no way a human blessed by the gods wouldn't notice.

"The opponent probably underestimates you, Witch. They think they can get rid of you if they use somewhat violent methods."

Dian talks without touching on the core. The opponent is a coward who's afraid of it being known that he relied on the witch's medicine. It's an outrageous act to make the excuse that Dian was in contact with the witch and made him take the medicine without permission into the truth. That's why there's a way to strike.

"But if they know they can't beat you, Witch, they'll probably back off."

That's right. If they know they can't win, they should realize that the truth will be exposed by making excuses. Besides, if they challenge a demon to a fight, it won't end well. According to Dian, the opponent is a high-ranking priest. He shouldn't be an idiot.

"I thought so."

I wanted to spend my time leisurely and freely. I want to do what I want and live peacefully. Not for someone else, but for myself. Dying as a human, being reborn as a demon, quitting the Demon King's castle, quitting being a secretary. I didn't really have a purpose, but I started living here as a witch and got involved with a lot of people. Ah, I sincerely want to protect this life.

"Then, shall I get serious for the first time in a while?"

I quit being a demon and became a witch, but let's show a little of my true nature.

I told Yuri and Dian to protect the village, and I decided to meet the assassins from the Imperial City. Both of them stubbornly said they would follow me to the end, but I'm not confident that I won't involve them since I'm getting serious for the first time in a while.

I use detection magic to find hostility towards me. Fortunately, I found signs of them far away from the village.

I take off my ring for the first time in a while. My appearance, which I had made to look like a human, returns to normal. A certain amount of time has passed, but I'm still a figure that can be called a girl. If I eat the cookies made with plenty of herbs that grew near the border, I can feel the demonic energy being absorbed greatly. It's much better absorbed and easier to refine magic than when I'm in my changed form.

"Well then, let's make them suffer just enough not to die."

I put magic power into my fingertips and create wind. The assassins have noticed my presence and are on guard, but they seem to be hesitating whether to fight because my appearance is that of a girl.

'Are you the ones connected to the god who is targeting me?'

I change my voice with magic and change my tone to be as terrifying as possible. The assassins' expressions become tense all at once. It would be great if they just ran away, but they've entered a battle stance.

'I can't forgive you for repaying kindness with evil, even though I shared my medicine when you asked for it.'

This is my true feeling. I didn't mean to do anything bad. It was from the bottom of my heart. But they have the nerve to threaten my life. I'm getting angry, and I mix lightning into the wind and drive the assassins away.

The assassins are not guilty. But I can't help but be angry. I haven't been this angry since I found out that the Demon King didn't know my name.

'Don't underestimate me!!'

As a result, the assassins, who were still in one piece but had suffered deep wounds in their hearts, ran away in a panic.

'If you lay a hand on me or those around me, this won't be the end of it.'

I crammed them with threats and the story that the knight was no longer there, so the assassins will probably tell the priest about their terrifying experience. It's still unknown whether this will be a blessing or a curse. But I have a conviction that it will be okay. Judging from the assassins' tone, they were something directly under the priest, and they didn't think that the witch they were underestimating was real. The priest will probably be reluctant to stir up a hornet's nest. He probably won't lay a hand on Dian either.

I let out a sigh of relief. I'm a little tired because I went on a rampage for the first time in a while. I probably used too much magic in a place without demonic energy. I confirm that the assassins are far away and sit down on the ground. My vision is low because I'm already small.

"Ah, that was fun."

Even though I was born a demon, I didn't have any urge to go on a rampage, and I've been living a quiet life because I've been working all the time. My magic was only useful for everyday life, so this was the first time I used it in a way that resembled fighting. I think it was surprisingly fun, and I roll over on the ground, wondering if I should just fall asleep with this pleasant fatigue and exhilaration.

"That's great, Secretary."

What filled my vision was the face I least wanted to see right now.

"Ugh, damn Demon King."
