[Side Story: Laila Saw It! (Laila's POV)]

This is the second update for today.

***
I am Lila.
I serve as a maid for the Gilmore Marquisate, one of the most prestigious military families in the Ascald Kingdom, in order to learn proper manners.
While I usually work as a maid assigned to the guest rooms, I take turns with Daisy, another mansion-attached maid, to look after Lady Magnolia, the daughter of the Gilmore family, when our senior maid, Rosa, is unavailable.
***
On a certain fine afternoon.
I am walking with Lady Magnolia, who wished to stroll in the garden after finishing her studies and meal.
Even on the way here, she greeted the elderly gardener, asked him about the kitchen garden and medicinal herbs, and listened with great interest.
Then, she consoled a trainee in the stables, kindly asking if he had any troubles while helping him carry straw, and listened with keen interest to his tales about the nuts and berries that grow wild in the mountains and fields.
Lady Magnolia's interests are wide-ranging... In the past, I too was bombarded with a rapid volley of questions and was utterly astonished. It seems Daisy had the same experience; we recalled it during a break and burst out laughing together.
...While Lady Magnolia is now very energetic (excessively so) and very active (excessively so), until recently, she was a very quiet young lady, as listless as a doll.
Due to circumstances of her house, Lady Magnolia is kept hidden.
The rule of the Gilmore family is that we are strictly reminded, as per our contract, "Do not speak of Lady Magnolia to anyone at all."
I heard that she has yet to have her essential noble debut.
When I heard that, I couldn't believe my ears.
Though it was rude, I wondered if she was born with some facial disfigurement, or perhaps a physical disability.
But in reality, she is more beautiful than any young lady I have seen so far, and seems to be very intelligent, so I found it most curious why she hasn't been presented.
Most noble children have their debut by the age of one.
By being presented, they are recognized as a member of the nobility. Not doing so implies that there is some reason it *cannot* be done—or so people would think.
In other words, she would be seen as having a flaw.
Those with weak constitutions are sometimes presented later in life, but it is quite rare.
I cannot help but worry, though I am merely a maid, that this might hinder her future marriage prospects...

「Hello there~ (・∀・)ノ」
「Oh my, young lady!」
「You're as cute as ever today.」
「We like you too, missy~」
……
………….
Right now, right before my eyes, Lady Magnolia of the Gilmore family is surrounded by the laundry maids—ahem, I mean, the elder sisters—chattering and making a lively noise.
Lately, Lady Magnolia, under the pretext of taking walks, roams all over the mansion, greeting the servants she encounters wherever she goes.
...It is already unbelievable for a noble, let alone the daughter of a prestigious Marquisate, to even speak to lower servants.
But she even joins in on their casual chats and tea breaks, happily talking about commoners' lives, events in the mansion, and rumors about Lady Magnolia's own family.
Her manner of laughing openly, carefree for her age, shines brightly.
It seems enough to blow away the gloom of her confined days...

「How do you do the laundry besides by hand?」
「We beat it with a washing bat, and for large items, we tread on them with our feet.」
「Eh~! I wanna try too!」
Hm?
「I want to try too...!?」
Hearing this ominous conversation, I suddenly snap back to reality.
「Lady Magnolia!?」
I hurriedly restrain the reckless young lady as she begins to take off her shoes.
「Rosa will scold you, you know?」
「Eh~, if you don't tell, she won't find out.」
「That's a no-go!」
Even I, known for my calm demeanor, rarely have to scold her, but she reluctantly complied this time.
Just then.
「Nyaaーーーn」
「A cat?」
From somewhere, the cat from Lady Wisteria's room is sitting in a curled-up pose in front of a garden bush, swaying its tail.
「It's Lady Wisteria's cat. Perhaps it's out for a walk... Primavera-chan, come here~」
If that fluffy fur gets dirty... Imagining Lady Wisteria's angry face, I tried to catch her, making *chichi-chichi* sounds with my tongue.
But the cat let out a small meow and started running.
「Ah! Wait, Primavera-chan...!」
「Huh? She's carrying something in her mouth?」
At the elder sister's words, looking closely, I see a small mouse in Primavera-chan's mouth...!!
The next moment.
Executing a beautiful turn, she came running towards us at an incredible speed.
「Gyaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!」
The cat, with the mouse in its mouth.
Charged straight at me.
Instinctively, I flailed my limbs impossibly and tried to run around.
But I tripped over a bucket at my feet.
「Waah! Lila, are you okay!?」
A shoe flying through the air. The laundry bucket tipping over with a crash and a splash of water. The upside-down, panicked faces of Lady Magnolia and the elder sisters.
My tumbling self. The cat leaping over my face.
And then, the mouse that fell from the cat's mouth at that moment. Onto my face.
The voices of the elder sisters who saw it.
「Oh my, how dreadful.」
「Gyaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!」
I slammed my body hard against the ground.
The cat sat down neatly in front of my face, let out another meow, and then, heartlessly, without reclaiming the mouse, returned the way it had come...
***
The next day.
Led by Rosa, who was back from her day off, Lady Magnolia came to see me in the guest room where I was tending to the furnishings.
Seeing me with bandages on my foot and hand, Lady Magnolia looked worried.
「Are you okay? It hurts, right? You should rest.」
「I-I'm f-fine...」
Ah, how embarrassing.
Yesterday, I fell while letting out a very un-ladylike scream.
The head maid, Gloria, who happened to be walking in the nearby garden (on her rounds), was shocked and pushed through the bushes to reach me.
She gave me first aid right away... she said nothing was broken, but it hurt terribly.
Rosa, who must have heard the story, has an exasperated look on her face. Can't blame her.
Lady Magnolia looks concerned,
「Lila, you won't quit right? You won't go work at another house, right??」
「I won't go.」
I could hear her muttering softly, "Doyou, Kuji..."
(??????)
For some reason, she was incredibly worried about me changing jobs.
***
And so, the quiet Lady Magnolia was gone before we knew it.
The day when she would cause an upheaval large enough to turn the mansion upside down was still a little further in the future.
This was the other maid, Lila.
